Oh my....

I finalized the driver's side setup today (save for fitting the door panel). Made sure EVERYTHING was sealed up completely.

I then fired it up and was impressed...but I knew something was amiss. It sounded good, but when I went to crank it up it started to sound distorted. I knew it was hardly being put through its paces though. (This is what you call clipping correct?) I then realized that I forgot to wire it bridged to the 500.4.

Once it was bridged, I turned that sucker up without once hearing any kind of distortion. It was super punchy and extended into the lows quite well. Its the RSD experience that I once had in my old car :)

All I can say is anyone who is unimpressed with the way these speakers sound is obviously just not setting them up correctly. Even with my "ghetto" setup, they sound quite nice.

The only problem is that with the car on, while receiving audio to the Hx-D10 thru the cd-changer that is in the car, I get some kind of ground interference. Not from any of the other inputs though. Unfortunately my Hx-D10 is very, very picky about which CD's it will read so I am forced to use the CD-changer a lot. As soon as I get my ipod put back together that will be a non-issue

I had to do the same thing on my 300ZX, had the BOSE enclosures similar to those and modified them to fit my Xenon 6.5s turned out really well I love them.

For your noise issue on the changer, run a 18 gauge wire through the car between the head unit and the changer chassis. You will likely hear the difference immediately, if not no loss but if so make it permanent.

I actually noticed that its not the changer. Its the radio. It could be everything, but I havent been able to hook anything up to the aux port or listen to a CD from the actual head unit itself.

I think I know what the problem is though. The speaker wires are run right next to a wire thats getting some sick voltage for my individual coils which are being run by the standalone engine management...the only thing that causes me to think otherwise is that the clicking ceases upon deceleration. The coils still fire on decel, but injectors dont.

Anyway, these are issues that I can't even be thinking about right now because I have to figure out why the car is dying on me at the moment. Number one suspect is the fuel pump or fp relay.

coils are very common for noise, this is a good first step then.

My FP went out on my 90CSi and it was horribly expensive being a rare beast in the US, I had to have the part shipped from europe.

When it went it was perfect and then it wasn't, in your case if it is intermittent I would suspect a relay.

Yeah I picked up a relay and fuel pump at the junkyard today for $17 lol

It would have been ~$500 worth of parts from the best internet site prices. :D

not sure if they will work, but we shall see!

in audio news, I finished the second speaker pod today. I just need to mount it, run more wires, then figure out the panels. That should be no small feat, but as long as I have good sound I don't care much.

Ok, so the install is pretty much complete now!

I just have to find a way to mount the tweets the way I want (very easy, just havent had the time), and now I have to make the door panels fit.

Basically they fit almost perfectly EXCEPT that the new door pods are now too deep for the door panels to sit properly. So I have to cut holes and figure out a way to integrate them nicely. I'll probably handle that with fiberglass or something.

FYI I figured out what was wrong with the car (kinda). It was the standalone engine management box itself. I have two that dont work now...ughhhhhhh

anyway on to my question.

I'm not exactly sure what to call it or how to describe it, but the speakers sound great until both doors are closed in the car. Then there is something about the midrange that is highly undesirable. Its like it reverberates inside or something...almost like the sound waves from each speaker are undergoing constructive interference or something. Its like what happens when I use my bigger athena home speakers in too small of a space or in the wrong part of a room.

Any idea what this is called (or even what the heck I am talking about!) and what I can do to fix it?

It sounds great with the doors open lol

finally got around to getting the door panels back on...well one of them so far. I have to figure out a nice cosmetic solution now. (fiberglass will be involved)

Hey guys, I've finally gotten around to expanding the enclosures for these things. I never really had a good idea for it before, but now I'm making some headway and am in pretty deep.

I stripped down my door panels in preparation for some major surgery. I'm using what used to be the door pockets for air space now. I'll be expanding the stock bose enclosures and the door panels are being cut to fit the new, bigger enclosures. See below...where the old enclosure stopped is where my room stopped. You can now see the inside of the door pocket because I cut it out lol

now my question:

If you've been reading along in the thread, you will see that I've been very unhappy with the midbass response of these speakers in this setup. I know what it can be because of installs I've done where much more volume was available. I believe its at least partially due to the extremely small area the stock bose enclosure allows for (I think maybe .15 cu. ft.). This mod should allow me to double that to about .3 cu. ft. and if I expand outwards a bit, maybe I can even get .5 out of them. I'm kinda concerned with how close the driver is to the back of the enclosure though. I have a feeling thats where the bad sound is coming from at least partly. Any thoughts on this? Anyone ever make a good sounding enclosure thats very thin (just barely thick enough to fit the driver) in depth but also very long (what I'm doing here)?

Take a look at it

any air escaping from a quasi-sealed enclosure will make noise but if you could give us an idea of what it sounds like we might be able to help.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

They are (or were) fully sealed before. It wasn't a problem with air escaping. Its so hard to explain, but it just sounds like the speaker is very choked in the low end. It wants to extend but something about the enclosure isn't letting it. In the same setup with the end of the enclosure cut off it sounds like shit too. Seems like maybe the plastic of the enclosure isn't an ideal material but what do I know.

Its like there is only midrange and no bass. Maybe its just lack of low end that makes the mids sound sort of tinny...Its like the speaker doesn't extend like I would think it should.

uploading a vid right now that should show you the difference between free air and in the housing. If you hear it on good speakers it should explain the problem fairly well.

Bringing this back from the dead for an update.

The video kept having errors upon upload, so I gave up on that. I finished the enclosure I wanted to make for these speakers (only for one side of the car though) and I can confirm that the bass response from the side I finished is 10 times better than the other side which is "unmodified". I can't wait to start on the other side! These speakers are now getting the opportunity to shine like they should although I know there is a lot more to gain with more room. This car has no more room though.

Here is a pic to give you an idea of what I did. The shape is what it is so it fits behind the door panel. Mind you, this is just the first mock up (very rough). It will be much cleaner when I finish it up. I might make a mold and just do a whole new one once its completely sorted out.
