One "mystery" solved, only to present another--(dead RSD)

Post by capitolj80 »

So, the issue about the balancing/phasing problem in my sisters car is resolved. Turns out that only one of the subwoofers is even working! Embarrassing for me cuz I didn't think to check that before today when I was at her house and she brought it up again. I pulled the not working RSD out and checked all the connections (they were fine) and even switched it to the leads from the other sub...no luck. I think typically when a sub blows (especially a quality one), there's some physical evidence to the malfunction...scraping when the come is pushed, a burnt lead, a disheveled or burnt VC, a smell...SOMETHING! This sub, however, appears (and smells) perfect. I even poked out the 4 little screens on the sides of the basket to see the VC leads coming in from the cone. Any ideas why she quit? Or how I get a better idea as to why? Got some decent pics.

:( The sick part is, is that I'm actually inheriting the subs and the RSD1200.1 cuz my fiancee is buyin my sisters car and she doesn't want the stuff! I certainly can't complain about that, but shit, one of the subs has to go out right before I get it! I guess all there is to do now is decide whether to buy another RSD12 and use 'em or sell the good one and go wth somethin else. Btw, I'll be selling the RSD1200.1 shortly so keep an eye on the classifieds if ya want one.

How do you set her gains if she keeps blowing subs?

the audiobahns weren't on the RSD amp. they were on a couple of bazooka's and I know she was clippin um but she wouldn't let me mess with it. The RSD12's however, were being run properly on the rsd1200.1. Gain at around 1/3, almost no boost (maybe 3db), H/U bass neg 2, H/U sub control 7/10(which I BELIEVE is a reducer bcuz it cuts off totally at 0). I sold her the setup so she let me tune it. Sounded great, nothing even close to distortion. Hell, the sub that's still workin sounds great on its own.

I dont have a meter here at home, but my brother has one that I'll put on in it the next couple of days to check the resistance. So do you think it's prolly just a short in the VC or something?
