RSDC 10 Box Size
RSDC 10 Box Size
Hello, wondering if anyone can tell me the impact box size will have on the RSDC104. I have two running under the seat of an ext cab pickup. Sealed box with .8 per side running off a RSD1200.1. Not ideal for max power running it at 4 ohms but it does very well. I don't know much about sub parameters but been wondering for a while what moving to a smaller box would sound like (.5-.6 range). Would I notice a difference?

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
Just fill it with cuts of 2x4 and you're good to go
Better yet build bracing inside the box to keep it from flexing. That will also increase output.
But yeah, 0.6 is about ideal for the RSDC 10 as far as I have found.

bracing a box that has already been built doesn't allow for some of the more elaborate bracing techniques, but you can do corner braces and cross braces but with cross braces you need to make sure they dont contact the magnet. this DIY shows a few bracing techniques http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/FAQ/Build/ also this site contains a bracing volume calculator at the bottom of the paige. http://westercamp.net/sub_box_calculator.htm

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
Thanks for the help guys. I'll brace the box and get both sides down to .6 and see how it sounds.

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
it should tight in up a bit! .8 is bigger then i have ever run them and i am in deep lust with those subs around .5-.6

Cool, I'm heading out of town for Easter but will work on after. One more question, I know each applicaiton is a little different but do you recommend any fill in the box? I'll play around but if anyone knows a good starting point that would be great.

If sealed then yes on the Polyfil.

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
since your working with a small enclosure you want to start with around 1/2 lb of polyfill and then add maybe a handful at a time until things start to rattle at that point you remove some. when things start to rattle that means the polyfill effect becomes opposite and starts to take up too much airspace. heres a link http://web.archive.org/web/200410270512 ... fiberfill/

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't but for a few bucks it is always worth trying. Keep your mind open and do an A-B test with some music you are familiar with to see which you like best.

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
I'd use a small amount of polyfill to reject standing waves, but considering polyfill makes your box seem "bigger", and you are making your box "smaller", then why would you want to make it "bigger" again?

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
I could understand why someone would want a phisically smaller box to sound like a bigger one, but in general I find the fill just seems to clean things up more often then not. I am not sure if it is the idea that I did not want to pull the speaker back out to remove the fill or a plecebo effect but I normally just liked it a little better.

Re: RSDC 10 Box Size
I finally completed the box modifications and brought it down to about .6 per side. I added a lot of bracing which really stiffened up the box. I put a small amount of poly in as well.
The improvement is significant! Cleaner, louder, overall better sound. I'm very pleased with these RSDC's.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
