PG Xmax on 200 rms?

I picked up a PG Xmax for a steal of deal today. Only 30 bucks! Its got a couple of blemishes by the dust cap, but it works great and the surround is actually in tact! My question is, can this sub be powered ok only on 200 watts? I plan on porting it because of the lack of power. Any box recommendations?

Also, is there any good replacement surrounds for this sub on like parts express or anything like that? I want to have a replacement if this surround starts to fall apart.

Should be fine on 200W as long as you're not expecting huge SPL.

I had an Xmax 10 bridged off the rear channels of an M44 and it was good, but certainly not the same output as my current setup.

I run an XMax 12 off my X100.4 bridged on the back channels, so 200 watts RMS. I have it in a sealed box with net .95 cubic foot. Sounds great in my car and I usually have to turn it down when my wife and daughter get in the car.

Awesome! Think I should make a small sealed box instead of porting it? I noticed that if I ported it, I would have to tune it to like 28 hz to tame the frequency curve. Anything above 30hz has a big peak which I don't want at all.

For my musical taste sealed works like a champ. Nice and tight for rock and whatnot but still get really low when I'm listening to rap or techno.

I only use all of the Xmax subs in sealed boxes... gets too boomy on the ported boxes.. A pain to tune....

Yeah I bet, I will just throw it in a little 1 cubic ft sealed box. Should get some good results.

241cu in or 0.139 cu ft for the 12" v2.

I'm pretty sure I have the v2. I have the one with the carbon fiber look to it. Not sure if the v1's are any different.

if you put that xmax in a sealed box do about .8 to 1.0 cubic ft. dont worry about displacement because it will be a minimal change. i liked my xmax 12s sealed and they were very nice. but they lacked output for the windows down 60miles cruises.

so i ported them. now here is the deal. if you port them put them in 2.25 cubic ft ported tuned about 32hz. the natural cab gain from your car will help with the higher boomyness by boosting the lower end of the graph your looking at on the program. it will level out..the boost should only be roughly +3 db at around 40hz. with the cab gain it agian will "even the graph"

this box will still sound tight, have good output around 33hz to about 50 and will be much louder then its sealed counterpart.

i had much sucess with this paticular enclosure. if you use pvc port then the lenght wont be so bad unless you plan on running two ports.
i would make a vent so its eaiser to wrap around the inside of enclosure.

Awesome! Thanks man! I actually have a 2.3 cubic ft box right now tuned to 34 hz. I will throw it in that to see how it sounds. When I looked at the graph, it definitely scared me to make a ported box. Now that you mention that it will even out, I am gonna throw it in there asap!

I've had both a V1 and a V2 and the biggest, easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the tinsel leads, the V2's have what looks to be heat shrink over it, the V1's do not. The surrounds are also a pinch different in their appearance. Ones shinier then the other, but it's hard to tell which is which w/o one of each side by side.

Is there a noticeable difference in sound between the v1 and the v2? I think I have the v1. It has a shiny surround with the bare tinsel leads.

You're fine to mix the V1's with the V2's. I did for years with 0 issues, even PG said it was ok.

Actually when I put my Xmax in my ported box today, it had the shrink tubing on the leads so it must be the v2. Anyways, this sub hits pretty dang hard only on 180-200 watts. I'm very impressed.

I wish my sub was in better shape though, it looked like the dust cap has been re-glued on and it looks crappy. Whoever had this sub before me, beat the crap out of it I'm guessing. Ohh well, it works like a champ. Probably one of my fav PG subs I have owned.

Yeah it sucks. I paid next to nothing for it too, so that makes me feel better. Do you think a nice solid layer of black caulk around the dust cap would make it look nicer?

Whatever is on there currently is pretty solid. Must be some sort of plastic cement or something.
