Dumb question of the day, do passive crossovers generate any heat?
Spent last weekend stripping out the trim and routing cables, ran a single speaker line to the dash and found a nice area behind the side kickwells to place the passive crossovers, (already a clifford box there on the drivers side) so I connected up the lines and wrapped the crossover boxes in bubble wrap and tucked them neatly away. Then refitted all the interior and hey presto left with all internal speakers lines within the bodyshell. Then had the thought of heat!
Anyone know for sure they will not be any kind of heat/fire risk installed this way?

If you feed them with a lot of watts, they generate some heat, but shouldnt be a problem unless you du SPL

YES! I was not aware of this until one day a customer came in complaining about the componants not working. We did a large PG system with two ZX600s and after some inspection we found that the rockford cross-overs for the componants he brought us were bad. The plasic case had obviously become VERY hot especially the coil as you could see where the top had melted over the top of the coil. There is a reson that most x-overs will have holes in them, they need to breath if you are gonna drive them. This kid probably only turned it down when the key was off though so if you are not a moron about your volume it should really not be a problem.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

those two pushed his front/rear, he had two more for the subs............ Since we were talking componant cross-overs I just didn't think the other two were that big of a deal. Tight fit in an s10, wish I had pics but the shop kept them and then closed.

you can also get noise into the system from where they are mounted. Its rare but I have heard of it happening from respected pros. One had it right above the fuel pump and the right mid had noise from it. I have also heard the cross-overs make noise.... I was running the Imprint time alignment function on my alpine and it runs a signal sweep through each speaker and measures the timing differences. The magnet that was mounted inside of the coil of my cross over had come loose and when the signal sweep would hit it, it would cause the magnet to move and the cross over itself made a funny hum. It was still held down by the cover but able to rattle just enough. You can imagine my confusion when I realized I really was hearing something signal related from where there was no speaker. A dab of silicon and it was all good.

Bugger
I looked for a good mount under the dash either side and couldnt find one, well glad I asked anyhow, and thanks for the answers. I do listen at max for prolonged periods sometimes, especially when we do a three hour late night blast down to the Cornish coast for a surf (system in a VW van, bed in the back). My missus likes the volume knob too.
Will give it some thought, may be able to vent where the carpet goes up the side of the kickwell, I maybe having a giraffe there though.
Cheers for the advice guys

Re: Dumb question of the day
Drove down the beach the other night and run the system at high volumes for 20 minutes and couldnt detect any heat coming the crossovers, will do a bit more testing before I decide to move them. Also noticed on another thread of that mad Aussie PG car that he hah three passive crossovers packed in behind the door panels, guessed that was mainly on full volume too...
