New Guy Wanting Config Input

Post by fritzthekatt »

Hi all, been lurking for awhile and since I'm starting to piece together a new build I figured I should finally sign up.

Reading through these threads has brought back many memories of the wicked products PG produced in the 90's. I had a system back then consisting of a M44 and M100 So when I started thinking about building system for my throwback rig PG immediately came to mind. Now I missed the late 90's offshore movement so the brands that I knew as highend then aren't so much anymore but either way it makes for some interesting decisions.

Anyways I'll get to it. Since the build will be in a Jeep 4X4 I decided to analog and picked up a Alpine 7292s that I will be building the rest of the system around. I'll have once set of Rear RCA outs to work with and would like to run a two amp system. Surround speakers will be 4 x 6.5 and I'll probably stick with one 10" sub. I know I'll need to figure out a way to split Front/Rear/Sub signals and should probably run a distro block buts that about as far as I've gotten. I think nostalgia is getting the better of me as I would like to run older PG amps but the new gear has some good things going for it and its available.

That being said I'm looking for some input on how you would build this out and if there are any issues I might face pairing up new gear vs old.

If it were me, I'd just get an Elite.5 or Ti21600.5 and be done with it. By the time you get two amps, distros, cabling, and everything that goes into running two amps you'll end up paying more than you would for a single five channel amp. Especially since you are just planning a simple system with replacement speakers and a single sub. Keep it simple.

Thanks for the response. Running a five or six channel amp had crossed my mind but like most I found the sub wattage to be a bit underwhelming. I'll take a look at the two you posted up.

I ran across a roadster 44 on ebay. Other than the monstrous size it appears to have the right amount of channels and wattage. Are there any cautions to look out for with that amp besides the normal ebay ones?

If you think the 800 watts that the Ti2 5 channel produces, or the 1100 watts that the Elite produces on their respective sub channels is underwhelming, then you probably expect more output than a single sub can produce at any power.

I agree. It is not like there are a lot of 10" subs out there which require 2000W or so to run.

Just to throw a number out there, I would guess anything past around 400W on a 10" sub starts being a point of diminishing returns.

I don't know if the Ti2 series is intended to replace the SD series, but if the SD 5 channel is significantly cheaper, it would be a good option as well. Or run a mono SD amp and a 4-channel SD amp. I personally like the small size of the SD amps, but have yet to play with one first hand.

I was running a single ti2 ported off of an Elite.5 at 2 ohm, and it was ridiculous output for a single 10". You can actually run a pair off the Elite.5 at 1 ohm very well too.

Unless you are wanting something that'll be heard from blocks away, you really don't need more than the elite.5. Hell, if you compare to vintage amps, the Elite.5 basically has the output of four M100's.

The new Ti2 amps are teeny tiny like the SD's as well.

Also, since you mentioned ebay, there is a dealer on there selling the new Phoenix Gold gear (He isn't supposed to be), but he is also selling just about everything he has for much more than you will pay for it from a respectable dealer. Having said that, he has an SD1300.5 for $599. You'll be hard pressed to find two good amps from any series for under $600.

Those are significant numbers and much more than the couple other brands I looked at. I think the RF punch offered 200 for the sub channel and the JL was about the same range. The wake your neighbors/look at me come steal my gear days are long behind me. Really most I'm going to need on a sub channel is 400-600. I do like the two options you posted though.

I looked up PG dealers in my area and the one in the area let's just say like his "markup" I'll have to take a look for the other guy. Either way got a little time to try and find a good amp solution. I'll need to sort out a preamp solution to expand the one set of rear RCA's and that's really driving me nuts.
