Considering Throwing More Power at Components

Post by Phoenixcolt »

Hey guys, I am thinking about bridging my JL HD600/4 and running a bridged channel to each rsd mid/tweet. The amp does 150x4 or 300x2. I am only using 2 channels right now giving each side 150 watts max, but I rarely listen at amp output maximizing headunit volume.

Is it risky to send more power to the rsd comps? It's clean power but I still don't really know if it's worth it to try, I definitely don't want to blow them. Also I don't need to send the full 300 watts to each side if I bridge.

Just because it's rated at 300x2 it doesn't mean that's what you are putting to them with the volume down and the gains down you will be doing less thank 300. Think of it this way, with it bridged, if you listen at the same loudness as before, you are running the same number of watts. The difference now is that your gains and volume are lower. Your capability is there to get louder but if your intent is not to go louder then you really don't have much to gain.

Two things to consider, where are your gains at now? If they are above 2/3 then it might be a good idea to do this. If not then you have to consider that at a lower ohm load your amp has a higher total harmonic distortion level. Granted it's probably way below an audible level still, but it's going to be higher, maybe by a factor of 10.
A few of these and a few of those.

Sweet thanks guys, yes I am looking to go a little louder, and I do realize I won't actually be pushing 300 watts to them at the levels I listen, but I want them to see more power than they are seeing now.

Exactly what vwdude said. I went from 75 watts per side to 150 watts per side and had to turn the levels down on my headunit so that it would blend with the sub again. I can't tell you there's an audible difference in sound quality, but I had extra amp channels not being used so I decided to do it.

This is my thinking, use 'em if I got 'em!
