sub enclosure question

Post by fordtough1 »

Does it make that much difference in sound between a rectangular box and one with a sloped front or back?

The reason I ask is because where I am putting my box, a rectangular one will work better, and would be alot easier to build. However if the sound quality is going to suffer, I will put some slope to the back side of it.

If it matters the sub I am building for is an RSD 12.

Also is polyfilling a good idea for this sub. I am building the box about 1.8 cu ft.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I seem to recall something in the Cerwin Vega training manual that said that having one side of ther box slanted helped with the sound but I cant for the life of me remember why.. I think it might have been to prevent standing waves in the box.

Filler is only really needed when the box isnt as big as you would like and you want to make it sound bigger.. So definitely not reqd in ported but in sealed it's usually performed :)

this thread would help on the polyfil question...

just do a search on " rsd 12" there are many threads on it here...
very helpful ... it was to me...

the sloped one helps in reducing standing waves within the enclosure.
Rectangular ones has this golden ratio rule for all the 3 dimensions but using an enclosure designing application would make life much easier.

I used WinISD that u can download.
This site helped a lot too.

I ended up with a 1.22cuft filled with polyfil as suggested by errin and the rsd12" rocks...

hope it helped... :o
