Engine noise?

Post by NOT 2 OLD YET »

I personally have not ever had this problem, my neighbor installed a M-25 (In perfect working order thanks to Tricky Ricky) and a Pioneer head unit. Head unit was in the car before with no issues! Amp is running 2 ohm stereo. Its a 71 Z28 with a HEI Distributor. Amp is grounded very solid on the chassis and still getting noise. Tried moving ground to different locations and still the same problem. Whats your take on this fellas he wants this perfect before the car shows next week!

It's a handy little tutorial that will help you troubleshoot that pesky noise coming through your speakers. Unless your problem is extremely complicated (like I had a few years back), this will work fine.

Thank You! I am going to show this to him. Thinking about it the amp is direct mounted to the trunk floor (Nothing in between) I should have caught that one, but I wasn't there when he installed it. Its his first time ever doing any car audio. He is a VERY talented old muscle car builder, but always kept them stock except for this one.

try a different set of rca's. just plug them in and run the above the carpet for a fast test. Also what year pioneer? Some of them if you ran the rca's while they were plugged in after the deck had been turned on, or allowed the center pin to ground out while swapping amps, that there was a pico fuse that would blow and cause noise problems. you can test this theory by taking a scrap piece of wire and touch it to the outer shield of the rca while its playing and see if the noise goes away.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

run an extra B+ wire from the same point as where the M25 is connected to a battery (Original place or second battery)

this for the headunit........ and a new B- wire also in the same size............

use a 12V relais to connect the ignition key to have the headunit turn on and off...............

Unscrew the amp from the metal see if it goes away if it does mount a piece of wood under the carpet then mount the amp to that. I have had these issues with MS MPS and M PG amps before.

I just talked to him, He said that he tried that! It looks more like its the head unit causing the problem he did some reading up on the issue and found that the Pioneer units were notorious for this problem. We shall see real soon.

Pioneers have a really small ground trace inside for the rca's. Solder a wire to the outer rca shield of one of the rca's and put a ring terminal on the other end a screw it to the back of the radio. Fixes 95% of pioneers with engine noise.

I have had that also had on my older pioneer 99 and 880 that had the same problems and the wire fixed it after many hours trying to find the problem
so I don't use pioneer any more

I just talked to him and he said he tried the wire trick. It didn't work so He put a inline RCA noise suppressor and worked like a charm! He said he never expected that amp to sound that clean and crisp! I told him its PG I would not expect anything else. Thanks for the help guys!!

I think he just got lucky! I have seen guys try them before and didn't work for them either. I figured it was just a gimmick.
