Not PG, but looking to fix and make $$$$

Post by knightrider358 »

Hey guys,

This isnt PG, but an employee of mine at work gave me this today and explain why it doesnt work but im hoping i can do an easy fix and turn around and sell it.

Its a memphis audio sc 1.500 mono block class d amp.

He said he had it hooked up playing one day and then it jjst died and went into protect mode. So i popped the cover and this is what i find.

So it looks like one of the two main large caps popped open and leaked and the fluid ran to some diodes and completed a circuit and caused a short and fried a few of them.

So guys, does anyone think its fixable?

Should be. Remove the bad diodes, clean it up with super pure alcohol, and then test the leads to make sure you have continuity where you need it. You should be able to replace the diodes and caps and make a few quick bucks.

Here's an example,of what I'm saying. I bought this amp for cheap...

Your situation is slightly different but I don't see why you can't at least check it out.

Before removing the diodes make sure you check their part number, they tend to get damaged in removal.

Well it's probably doable, but you need to ask yourself if it's worth it. You need to disclose that the amp has been repaired, and if you are honest you should include before and after pictures.

I get my alcohol from an electronics store locally called Fry's electronics. I'm sure it's available from digikey, mouser, Newark... Wherever you'd get your parts from. There's a chance that once it's all cleaned up it won't look as bad and you can see where the actual damage is. Since it went through the board it's probably fairly extensive, but be prepared to spend some time and a few bucks fixing it and maybe have no success once it's all done. If nothing else you could gain knowledge and experience.

For some reason I tend to take on stupid projects like this. Not sure I'll be doing any more this bad though.

Oh, and follow the traces that go to and from the damaged area. Check continuity from one of he trace to the other. Check how much resistance there is, it should be very low. If here's no continuity you might need to solder wires below the board to make sure that everything is connected to what it's supposed to be connected to. Anything can be fixed, you just need to determine if it's worth it.

Thanks vw, i got it cleaned up and did tests on the diodes and surprisingly they have continuity but like you said its bad, but im gonna try replacing the two main caps first and see what happens.

If i even get $50 for it, ill be happy.

Btw, this is my first for repairing so like u said im gaining a lot of knowledge so fingers crossed!!!!

Good luck grasshopper and don't let this repair let your hopes down if it fails. I still remember butchering the crap out of a SS amp (my first repair, still have the amp).

And if your serious on repairing amplifiers then consider buying Perry's Tutorial...I don't regret ever getting it. Plus Perry helps out when your in doubt.

In the tutorial it will give you a long list of tools needed for repairs, expensive tools but worth every penny. I invested in a Hakko desoldering tool a few months ago and it was worth every penny, made re-capping a whole lot faster and fun lol.
