MS vs MPS

Just acquired my first MPS amp, a 2240. Pretty decent shape, not stellar, but not abused. Little dent in her.. And typical lifespan wear/tear.

Been trying to look up the main differences between the MS and MPS lines.

Can some of you gurus educate me/us on the pros/cons of the 2 lines and how they compare to each other? I get the general difference... But figured I'd ask. Google didn't give me any valuable info/hits on the question.

It's quite nice owning one now, and seeing those guts for myself!! The wife wants me to melt it down for the gold after I told her it's littered with the stuff - NO way woman.

it will give you around 37/38w rms each channel at 4ohm stereo....

it will give you the same power at 1ohm stereo,what the ms275 would give at 4ohm stereo.....around 95w rms/channel

the mps series are high current amps, where the ms series are high voltage.......

brigded at 1ohm the mps2240 will give the same as the ms275 at 4ohm......around 280w rms/channel


that you have to recap the amp and replace the silpads is already posted here a million times of course.....

HV over HC any day. Trust me there is not enough gold there to be worth melting...lol...it's plated so the most you would get out if if properly extracted would be about 5-10 dollars. The gold plating is a protective layer preferred than the tin plated layer. Gold plating is more expensive than tin plating as tin plating is easily done with the right chemicals/fluids.

Real simple! The MPS were put out as straight up "Cheater Amps"! In comp it was based on what the wattage rating was, not the actual output. Many moons ago I ran a MPS2500 and 2240 which kept me in the 0-151 class. I am still in love with the MPS amps, which is why I have Many of them.

Looking at the specs the MPS2240 seems to be the biggest cheater of PG amps. The MPS2500 is spec ed to do exactly same power as its high voltage brother MS2125 but at half the ohm loads. Where as MPS2240 is spec ed to do same power as MS275 but at one quarter the ohm loads.

I would like to see these MPS amps dyno'ed because I have a feeling the MPS2240 will do same power as MS275 but a half the ohms, not one quarter.

PG used to spec their amps very vaguely back in the day.

If you knew all those points, then you have the whole story, there is nothing more. Both MS and MPS are built with the exact same parts, and exact same design. Just a few different values on a few parts changes their rail voltages, one for high current, one for high voltage.

one of my first experiences with pg was a MR2 a guy had in high school. He had 2 of the mps2240s in his car so he competed in the 0-100 watt class. Now naturally they had those suckers wired down to maximize the output and he was naturally using much more power then 100 watts. But in those days the 4 ohm rating was all that mattered.
