Ok, I give up!!! HELP!!

Post by Brad06 »

Heres the story..... i had a jvc cd player for about 5 years, it quit working so i bought another one (different model, still JVC) I installed the new head unit, and now my fuse coming from my D-block blows after a few minutes. I know its not a dead short, obviously or the fuse would blow the second i put it in....however i do not know what could be causing this....I DONT EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START!!! anyone have any ideas???

Well, I'm not really the one here to be answering this but...

Could it be some kind of intermittent short?

Is your head unit (deck) wired to the distribution block or is it done up with a stock wiring harness?

Is this the fuse for the amps or the HU?? Do you have the HU fused to the distro block?

the headunit is not powered by the d-block. I bought the harness adapter needed, and wired it accordingly. there are 2 power wires coming from my d block....one for my RF800.2 and one is for my RF200.2 amps. the fuse for my 200.2 is not blown, but the one for my 800 is the one that keeps blowing. I checked my ground and its making good connection...I just dont understand why it would work for a few moments, then nothing...i have 2 60 amp fuses in my d block, one for my 200 and one for my 800....the fuse NEVER blew with my old JVC....

Check your gains on that amp. I bet they're way to high.

the gain is set at 1/2. just a question, but if the fuse didnt blow with the old JVC, why would it blow with the new one??? the head unit doesnt send that much power or signal to the amp does it?

Your new unit might be running much higher line voltages than the last.

Your pre outs to the amp differ from head unit to head unit. Some have like 1-2v, some up to 4v (high end alpines)

I use an 8v line driver, and yeah, blew the fuck out of my fuses until I lowered the gains..

Do you have manuals to the amps? How about checking the fuse sizes on the sides of the amps. I'm wondering if a 60 amp fuse is just not big enough for that amp. If your old JVC was sending out a smaller volt signal the amps possibly were not working as hard and maybe not pulling the current they are now. Maybe a bigger fuse is necessary now that the amp is pulling full current.

The above is just an opinion, mr tibbs will not be held responsible if you choose to follow said opinions!

the 800.2 fuse rating is 3x40amp. I lowered my gain to 1/4 and the 60 amp power wire fuse has not blown yet, although my lights dim like crazy, and its not turned up at all on the headunit, bass down all the way, loud turned off. my old kdg-110 HU made my lights dim, but only on real low notes!!! do you think a bigger fuse *say 80-100amp* would help? caps are worthless and alternators are quite pricey! its just the whole lights dimming thing draws unwanted attention. :D

Dimming lights is an indication of overall current drop in your power system.

How is the sound output level now? Is it less, equal or more than with the old HU?

If your new deck is putting out significantly higher voltage on the pre-outs than the last, you may not need to use the amp gains very much, if at all.

What size power wire are you using? Looking at your amp/fusing you should have at least 0 gauge from the hood and 4 gauge to the amps, correct?

If the amp fuse size is 3x40 amp shouldn't the power wire fuse be 120 amps?

Or am I misunderstanding what he is saying?

I also would be curious what size power wire you have, and how big the stock alternator is.

4 gauge to the amp. the sound level is nowhere near as loud as the old head unit, it vibrated so much you couldnt see shit out of the rearview mirror. the side mirrors vibrated as well, and i do not notice this at all with the new HU. stock alt. is 105 amps at 2500rpm

Brad, take a look in our FAQ section read the Gain setting and Power topics. I think you may find those to be a very interesting read.
I think we've established that "Ka Ka" and "Tukki Tukki" don't work.

Yeah, 60 amp is definitely too small of a fuse if your amp is fused that high...
