Dave, BTW, a 91 Sy, I'm envious. My dream truck is a 93 Ty. Take care of it. I'm loking at getting one when my Sierra is paid off. 0-60 in 4.2 sec for a truck

why is the sy/ty so special?
it seems like you could get any ol s10 and FI the 4.3 or LS1+blower
and be out about the same or less $$$. (i realize that it is limited and therefore has special value...but....)
(or twin turboed 427 like lingenfelter*sp*

As mentioned the AWD allows the HP & Torque to get to the pavement. It makes it quick on the street on street tires. Its not the best at the track when compare to slicks, but I drive my Truck on the street. Prior to my Syclone I was into Corvette & what I going to be doing for HP in Syclone, I would never even think about in my old Corvette, it wouldn't hook up in 1st or 2nd gear. In the trucks that I have driven in, they make it feel so streetable in what I would think is an insane for 2wd.
A Sy/Ty has a lot of unique and different part than the run of mill S-10. It the best performance wise S-10 of its generation, with unique Body Cladding (ground effffects kit), ECM, wiring harness, Interior appointments, and obviously the Engine & drivetrain. It usually cost more to make a 'clone' of out a S-10 than it does to make one.
The AWD can be converted in 4x4 S-10 for not too terribly much money. You really need a special 350 (ususally stroker or forced induction) to be faster than what a Turbo 4.3 can do. As for adding FI & turbo to a 4.3, it can be done, but the ECM, wiring harness, engine pistons, maincaps, Intake & exhuast Manifolds, etc are all different. The regular S-10 factory 4.3 FI is really limited in capacity and development compared to the Sy/Ty setup as well. Some guy are doing LS1 Turbo. Some guy are really pushing the 4.3 with racing blocks. I can make more HP than I want with my beefied up 4.3 and factory block, so I have no need to go any larger.

4 years back I had a guy that was going ot sell his 92 Ty for 12500. The original engine was in the garage w/16k miles on it and a beefed up 4.3, after boreing it over and the new stroke it was in essance a 5.0L w/450hp AT the wheels. A switch to go from hp distrobution of 65% rear and 35% front to 50/50, up to 15 psi of boost from the factory 7-9 psi. Took me for a spin in it and I've NEVER been in anthing that put me in my seat as hard as that. Not the Vet, the Rousch Mustang, or a friends Camaro w/a 350 w/NOS at 400 rwhp and a 150 shot on the NOS.

I've been wondering, how does one exact dyno test an AWD vehicle?smgreen20 wrote: it was in essance a 5.0L w/450hp AT the wheels.
Wouldn't you need two sets of "rollers" (too lazy to look up term) to really test the overall horse at the wheels, since the torque is spread across all four wheels somewhat evenly during racing and testing conditions?
I'm interested!

SOLD: '91 PG 4Runner
Their are all wheel dyno's, with a two sets of roller.fuzzysnuggleduck wrote:I've been wondering, how does one exact dyno test an AWD vehicle?

You can also take the front drive shaft out as well and run them on a 2wd dyno.

The drive shaft was taken out on this one. We only have three places in town that have Dynos, and none of them have a dual roller.
