You really don't need that much power on subs. I recently switched to 150w to my single RSD comp 10" and it's loud enough to run over +10dB compared to my front stage. For me this is enough, but I know many people who love their bass being a good 20dB higher, or more.
If you consider doubling power gets you nearly 3dB....
150 - 300 = 3dB
300 - 600 = 3dB
600 - 1200 = 3dB
So you're only 9dB louder running 1200 vs 150 watts. That's big gains in terms of SPL setups, but for SQ, you probably don't need the huge bass gap.
yeah i was running 1/2 of a europa and the spl was fine, i've swapped it out for a boltar (700watts!) jut to give a bit more control of sub.

In my Ext cab '01 Sierra I'm running TI6's off a JL 300/2 with the passive crossover and have never had any problems (approx. 4 years). I agree on the clipped signal theory.
I,m getting there now.
