Looking for Headunit suggestions

Post by mr tibbs »

Well, after hearing the Ultra comps in the car the wife is all excited to get them into the FJ and I think I have finally talked her into getting a new HU. I have always been a Pioneer guy, but maybe it's time to try something new. So, I'm asking you guys for suggestions. I am looking for a mid line unit, nothing to fancy, but I would like a few things. Here is my list of requirements:

1) I would like at least a 5 band EQ
2) MP3 player
3) Must have a LPF and a HPF for the sub and the comps
4) minimum of 2 pair of RCA's, for the comps and the sub
5) Must be Sirius ready (yes I realize I will need to buy the extra unit)
6) Steering wheel controls would be a plus (again I realize there is a separate unit)
7) I'm looking to spend under $150 new or lightly used

That's about all I can think of right now. I do not need an active x-over or anything fancy like that. Just a basic unit with a few extras for tuning a little bit. Anything you guys currently use or have used in the past that you liked I would be willing to look at. Also, I have been looking on Sonic Electronics and Crutchfield just for the free wiring harness and install kit. If you guys think that is a burn please let me know.

im not 100% on the 5 band eq. it DOES have bass, mid and tweet level's where you can change the boost frequency and the range of octaves it changes.
my ex-girlfriend said "its car audio or me"
i've had tougher choices at a soda machine...

I have looked at doing that a few times. That's wayyyyyy to confusing and expensive for me though. :(

Hey sorry I'm heading out to fetch dinner, but check the manual out.

http://inform3.kenwoodusa.com/manuals/XXV01D.pdf

Pages 10-15 might tell you what you need about the EQ settings and such. It's a bit complicated for me. I play with it a bit but realistically I am not a guru...I have it where I like it currently....

The manual settings for the EQ get pretty in depth (I think).

BTW I have two of the 25th anniversary decks...Just took the other one out (had a spare) and replaced it with the X991!

Well Steve, that looks great! It has a 4 band EQ, but something tells me I can live with that. Do you by chance know what Sirius tuner this requires? Also, if I chose to go this route do you guys have a good place to buy the install accessories?

what kind of install accessories do you need?
I am not sure what kind of sirus tuner it requires...I have not stepped up to sirius as of yet.

I'll tell you one thing....that I didn't like about the deck is that I had to LEARN it from the bottom up. It pretty much requires using the remote.

So if your wife is Technically challenged and hates change....this might be hard for her to use/learn. My wife hates it! I love it! :) I'm a gadget freak.

So anyway just a heads up before you get tooo attached....If she likes to learn and have new things and play with gadgets this could be for her.

I'll include the remote for it.

I do have TWO of them...and can take pictures...of both if you wish and select the one you want...or Both...is up to you...If not one will be my spare!
Just let me know...other wise the one that has been sitting has been tested and cleaned from a dealer. Which pictures are already up somewhere if you haven't seen it yet in the for sale section.

Well, as long as she can change the channel on the sirius and tracks on the cd she would be ok. She never changes any settings anyways and I have an LPL installed for the sub so she would be ok there. I guess I'm just wondering if this would be overkill for what I was going for.

Also, if you can find a manual or something that states what Sirius model is required. It looks like there is quite a price difference in models and if it requires the expensive one then this is probably not the way to go for me.

As far as install accessories go I would need the wiring harness for the FJ and a dash kit.

ahh...I c...let me see what I can find on the sirius thing....As far as accessories go, I dont have anything there for the FJ or dash kit. I will have a trim ring, and the regular kenwood harness.

It may be over kill..?! I dunno hehe...what was in there before?

Here's Crutchfield's take on the Sirius. It shows 3 units that work?!

I dont know anything about sirius...so you might need to probe a bit more and figure out if these will truely work or not.

The KTC-SR902 unit should work as well.
