Ultra Subs??

Post by mr tibbs »

Looks like a newish company, anyone heard of them? I just won a comp set from them over on DIY so I guess I'll get a shot at testing them out. Take a look at the website! http://www.ultrasubs.com/

I'm soooooo excited!!! I'm gonna throw them in both the car then the FJ. In the FJ they will be up against the Exile set I have in there, we'll see who wins! I have to do a review so look for it in the reviews section. I'm really looking forward to trying out some new gear! :hurr: :metal:

I know huh!! I can't wait to try them out. It seems like forever since I have played with new audio toys in my own vehicles. And never free ones!! Also with the win there was a free trunk pack of Second Skin sound deadning thrown into the mix. Looks like I can finally finish the door panels in the FJ like I have been meaning to since I did the first install. Not too shabby!

I have been following them from a distance now for a little while. I have spoken to the owner and he has a different attitude that hopefully alot of the industry will take on. Reminds me of the old PG days to tell you the truth. His stuff costs more, and is worth more, you got a good deal for sure.....

They look kind of like my oldschool JBL GT's from 89-90. Let me tell you, they dont make them like that anymore.Ive had some high end comps in the past too, KEF KAR M160's, MOREL HYBRID,and now FOCAL(shut up Brian ), now I have yet to give my FOCALS a decent sealed and deadened home, but I would say those JBL's where right up there with the MORELS.
Looks can be deceiving but just off looks, they look solid. I like theyre way of thinking as well, no BLING BLING, all the money goes into the making of the driver.

599? I guess youll tell us if they are worth it after the review. All in all, nice score tibbs 8)
Looking forward to the review! 8)

Lambros, the owner of Ultra, is a crazy sob that's for sure! I haven't personally been able to check any of his stuff out but he's definitely particular about his products and I would imagine you won't be disapointed.

I have only seen them from the advertising on DIYma. I guess it would not be fair when I redraw the second winner for the DIYma contest that you win tibbs huh? ;)

hey what do you know a basket that isnt used by most of the market :D (as far as I know). Good for them for designing their own basket.

MSRP is a bit steep tho

I don't really like the styling on these subs that much, but I can really appreciate that it's far more original than most others out there today. Let us know how they perform, tibbs. I can't rate subs based on specs alone but it does look pretty good on paper to me.

It looks like a few of you know the owner. Has he been around for quite a while or what? What is his story?

As the owner of Ultra, no he has not been around that long but he has been in the business for more then just a little while. He is just the kind of guy that doesn't talk bs like most manfacturers do and you will always remember if you have talked to him.

I could invite him on here to have him tell you his story if you want. Wouldn't you rather get the story from the source?

This is a review from a very respected person in our industry on Lambros and his woofers.
In a nutshell, you get more than you pay for with Lambros' Ultra woofers.

What makes it hard to sort that out when you compare Ultra woofers to other woofers from other small companies that provide niche products is that many of those companies make up bullshit specs and bullshit performance claims to suggest that bullshit features provide real benefits. Woofers aren't super-complicated and they have to do two things well to be quality products. They have to handle power and they have to sound good. In order to sound good, one has to minimize distortion and optimize the suspension and motor to provide the right response in boxes that are appropriate for cars. Lambors' woofers do both. His power handling specs aren't bullshit and one close look at the woofers by someone who knows speaker design is enough to reveal that the specs are real.

What makes Ultra great as a manufacturer are--his requirements, what we call product definitions at xxxx, come from real-world use. His customers (I met several of them) are no-nonsense New Yorkers and won't tolerate BS. He also understands what parts of the woofer really contribute to better performance. So...when he tells his engineers what he requires, he tells them in a language they understand, so they can follow his instructions. I knew his lead engineer in a previous life and If we didn't have great engineers at xxxx, I'd hit this guy up to engineer stuff for us too.

Finally, Lambros is a retailer and understands what you guys need as retailers in terms of customer support. He answers the phone, he processes returns if there are any and, since he's the owner, he can do whatever he wants to satisfy you. It's really hard for a big manufacturer to provide that kind of service. Be careful about what you read into that statement though. Just because a small company provides good service, doesn't mean you should have their gear in your shop. Good service is one way to make up for shitty products. We've all bought the BS in the past.

Fortunately, Lambros' woofers are first-rate and he's a stand-up guy. If I had a shop, I'd buy his woofers.

Yep Lamros is a stand up guy.

And having MEtallica's Orion playing on his website makes him an even better guy.

Just a quick heads up guys, the initial review is up in the reviews section. I just posted a link to the original thread over on DIY instead of copying and pasting the entire review. If you would please go take a look and tell me what you think. All questions and comments are welcome as always.

What's up with "Hybrid" speakers anyways? How are they different from typical ones?
