Speaker surround replacement

Post by kyinstlr »

I am hoping one or two of you car audio gurus can help me with a non-Phoenix problem. I lucked out & found this site & after several days of reading posts & looking through your stash, all I can say is WOW. I am very impressed at the collections that I see. You guys sure know great gear when you see it.

So on to my question; I am trying to find some one who can re-cone, or re-surround a very old pair of Alpine 7" subs. The foam has just deteriorated over time & made the speaker unusable. I realize this is an odd speaker size, which is why I am having trouble finding someone capable of doing this. So I thought, just maybe, someone on here may be able to point me in a more specific direction.

Lastly, I realize this "phorum" is primarily for the classic, & may I say unstoppable, Phoenix Gold, but do any of you know of a forum for Alpine fans?

Have you checked out Paul's excellent how-to?

As long as you can find a proper sized surround, you're in business...

Not sure of an Alpine forum, but we certainly love all classic car audio equipment. We've got lots of V12, Orion, Zed, Zapco, Audison, etc. fans here, so we certainly won't shun you ;)

Honestly, finding the right size surround seems to be my biggest headache.

With the other, I always kinda favored the old 35 series amps from Alpine. i.e. 3553, 3527, 3522

You might have to find a big 6.5", or small 8". 7" is indeed a very odd size, and I haven't been able to find a 7" specific surround yet.

I contacted a company through a google search & the tech told me he would have to take an 8" surround, cut out a part of it, & "weld" it back together, without being sure it would work or how long it would last. He wanted $50 dollars U.S. per speaker. I thought that was a little steep.

Seas has a whole slew of 7" speakers. Might want to try Madisound.

Where are you located?? In the USA, or somewhere else.?

If you were here in Australia, I'd know the exact place to send you..... http://www.totalrecoil.com.au/

In the US..... sorry but I would'nt have the foggiest

p.s. The Alpine 35 series amps were always my favorite Jap made amps of that era. I used to use a 3555 and a pair of 3544's

I have a speaker out of a panasonic surround sound system with a 7 inch speaker that is no good. The surround on the other hand is perfect. Its rubber. I would be more than willing to carfully take it off and send it to you. I wouldnt ask anything for it. I can take measurements of it if you would like

WOW I never thought I would get this many replies.

yes I am in the US, middle of no-where in Kentucky. That is where the nic came from, Kentucky Installer, kyinstlr.

Waynehead that would be great. I couldn't thank you enough :D

Madisound & CDT are the only 2 places I haven't contacted as of yet. Thank you so much for all the feedback. I was almost ready to give up hope. Too bad they don't make one of those little smiley faces of a dog chasing its tail.

not a problem, I need to dig and find the speaker. Im sure I havent got rid of it. I will search for it tonight, I would have already but I honestly forgot about this post. Ill get it off and take some measurements and pics. I originally replied thinking you had a speaker instead of a pair. I only have one surround. But if it will help you then youre welcome to it.
