ZPA Questions

I tried searching, and came up with too much miscellaneous stuff, so I figured I'd just ask.
I've been trying to find a ZPA (preferably a 0.3), and have been rather unsuccessful. So far, the only place I've found them is on fleabay, and they're up at ridiculous prices. Is there another resource I should be looking to? I also scour caraudio.com and diyma, both of which are rather dry aside from ZXti's.
I was also curious, since I'll be using the ZPA (that I'll eventually acquire) to drive a 10w7 (sealed enclosure). The 10w7 is 3ohms, and I've heard the load is really more like 2.75, does that mean the amp will adjust and run at 3ohms or will it revert to 2ohms? I've never been very well versed on the electrical side of all the car audio thing. Though I'm trying to avoid getting a .6 as I've already got quite a load on my batteries.
Any information would be appreciated.
Cheers,
J

The ZPAs only kick into high current mode, if driven hard with 2 ohm or less, so it shouldn't go into high current mode with that sub. From your POV it really doesn't make much difference as amp will put out near enough to same power, regardless of load, but would draw a lot more current if it was driving a 2 ohm load or less.
hope it helps

Do you have W7 yet as you would be better off witha W6 IMO, as it will sound better and the ZPA 0.3 will drive it nicely. The W7 is geared more towards SPL and so doesnt sound quite as good and could use more power if SPL is what you are chasing

I already had the w7, bought it off of craigslist for super cheap. I'm actually reasonably content with it. It's not nearly as boomy as you'd think, though it's definitely not as precise as a w6 it's not the sloppy pig you would think it is.
Thanks for the ZPA info, right now I'm using a Tubedriver TD750, and I'm dying to move it to powering my rears.

yeah kewl, its still a great sub but many ppl think if the W6 is good the W7 is better lol not realising its more output focused than W6.

At $100 if I had it, I'd have it. If you know what I mean.
When the ZPAs go into high current mode they WILL reduce power. How much? On average about 20% less. So the 0.3 would go from 600 x 1 @ 4 ohms and 520 x 1 @ 2 ohms. You wont be able to hear it IMO.
A 0.5 tested did 1100 x 1 @ 4 ohms and 865 x 1 @ 2 ohms.
If you have a $100 to spend plus S&H, I'd go for the amp ^^.

Looks like seller is using zeropoint cable Ryan, so maybe worth making an offer on that too

I'm dealing with the guy, though not really sure I wanna gamble since he doesn't have paypal. Trying to get him to sign up for it, so I can have some sense of security. If I seal the deal for 100$ and he includes the cables, I'll let you know.

rscecil007 (Ryan) is chasing some of that cable, so yeah if you can score cable too I'm sure he would be stoked if you sling it in his direction

Oh for sure, if you get it and its got the ZP cable, I'd prob want the cable if you weren't that interested in it or didn't need it. thanks for watching out CP.

Hell, if someone's local to him and wants to pick it up and ship it to me, I'd pay extra for the effort. Hell, they can keep the cap too, I'm just in it for the basscube and ZPA. Dealing with him is slow and painful thus far, and if he doesn't do paypal it's a tad too shady for my tastes.
Ryan, if it's got the cables, they're your's for the price of shipping, my system is already pre-wired with 1/0 for a 3rd amp.

Thanks man, appreciate it!
Buying off CL can be risky. I recently bought some stuff off a guy in Tampa, and he wasn't the best at email communication, but I paid with a credit card through paypal, and my stuff showed up fine. Kinda unnerving though, not sure I'd do it again.

The guy selling just doesnt' know what he's talking about. There wasn't ever a 4 channel ZPA, to my knowledge, unless it was one of those crazy one off things PG did occasionally.

The guy hasn't responded to me lately, I'm guessing it was either a scam or he sold to someone local and didn't bother telling me. Good thing I didn't send money like he was asking.
The quest for a ZPA continues...

So the Miami guy flaked out completely, but I found another in Tampa Bay. He's shipped me a 0.3 which should be here in a few days.
I bought a TBA on Ebay, which ended up being 2 pieces, both are greyish and were "upgraded by phoenix gold for 35$" according to the seller. What exactly is the Receiver for? The TBA manuals I've found online don't mention the Receiver, and the system examples only ever show a Transmitter as part of the setup.
I also was wondering if anyone's ever found a source for PS2 to RJ45 cables? Or am I stuck making my own?
Thanks again for all the info

you put the transmitter in the front of you vehicle, put the receiver in the back with your amps. connect the two with a PS/2 cable.
Deck---(RCA)--->TBA-1 Transmitter----(PS/2)---->TBA-1 Receiver---(RCA)--->amp
The TBA you are looking for has an RJ45 connector output. I think you have to cut a resistor in the amp to enable the use of the floating ground balanced input. FYI...

So the TBA I bought is just essentially for moving the signal without dirtying it, but not actually for using the ZPA's balanced input?
Posted: Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:46 pm
by cyberpunky
The TBA set (trans and receiver) are for use when your amp doesn't have a balanced line in. The ZPA does so you only need the trans part. You feed HU rca line level signal into trans, then plug the balanced lead directly into amp instead of receiver. jobs done

Ahh ok, thanks CP, so I guess the only thing I need then is the PS2 -> RJ45 cable, which I doubt I'll find. Time to break out my ethernet crimper -.-
