New system ideas (old school theme)

Post by Audiophiliac »

Well I have always been fond of old school car audio gear....old school to me is early to mid 90's-ish. I picked up some RF Audiophile subs (thanks todd :)), which should make a nice substage. I will probably use all 3 of them (why not?).

I want to find an Alpine CDA-7939R head unit. I think I know where I can get one...its overseas, but hey...cannot find one to save my life here. I might go with the PRA400 processor....or I might use something else.

Not sure what to use for front stage. Old A/D/S? Old RF Audiophile components ( never seen a set of those for sale either), old Quarts or DDDrive comps? Not sure what else to consider.

For amps, its tough. I would love to stay with PG. But I am open to other options. Orion HCCA225 would be awesome for the subs....so would a PPI ProArt25, or a Soundstream Class A 3.0 or 5.0, or a PG MPS2240. Cannot really lose either way with any of those amps. I would get a matching one for the fronts.

That is as far as I have gotten so far. Just brainstorming for now. Not even sure if it will go in my current vehicle yet. I might end up selling the VW for either a pickup or a bigger car (BMW 7 series....yummm)

Throw some ideas around. And if you have anything for sale, shoot me a PM and maybe we can work something out. I am all out of trades.....might be willing to let my Eclipse 8053 go though.

just remember these will not take the power like the newer subs. im 35 so i remember the quality we had back in the day. i would have kept them but my mustang has small trunk. now i have 3 jl 10w6ae soon the be powered by one side of my ms1000ta. stick with the old school theme maybe a m25 for each driver.

Yeah I think the RMS for those subs is only like 150W or something. It will have plenty of output for me....especially if I use all 3 of them. :)

I am trying to keep it pretty simple....so lots of amps is out of the questions. MPS2240 for the sub and MS275 for the fronts would be perfect....or HCCA225 and...what is it...GX275? Or SS CLass A 3.0 and a Ref300.....something along those lines.

We will see. It might be a long process of collecting the right gear. :)

dammit itchy! You have one????? Probably just sitting BNIB in a closet somewhere right? :!:

Seriously....if you have one you are willing to let go of, I am interested. I had another guy I spoke with on the VW forum that has a couple. He was in UK and rather uninterested in shipping, but I could probably pry it out of his hands with enough $$$. But I would much rather buy from someone more trusted. hint hint ;)

Yeah I also thought of the SS comps. Might be an option.

I found a set of RF Audiophile 6.5" mids for cheap. In great condition too....but I am thinking of trying to round up some Exact 6.3 SS comps.

Yep watching it. Anyone know the difference between the 7939 and 7939R?

I 'think' from memory that the only difference was the the tuner.

The 'R' version supported RDS radio and was sold in the UK and Europe AFAIK.
