Custom PG amps

I have a plan for my next instal. I am going to make what looks like one large amp. Inside this custom case will be five separate MS amps, all as new and unmodified. The central largest amp will be an MS2250 TA to power my subs. This will be flanked by four matching MS275, so each drive unit in my two way system will have it's own dedicated amp.

I know what this will end up looking like but I will have to create some visuals of this at a later date. But it will look similar to a very large 2250, with white casing, plexi, vents, silk screen details. But for now here is a quick layout diagram...

I know some of you also have plans for even larger custom amps. How about we have an update of your progress in this thread...

So are you making a unified heatsink for all of them? Many have started down this path and failed...

He did say "unmodified" so I'm assuming he means he'll be building an enclosure/case to mount all the amps into with stock heatsinks intact. I could be wrong though... plus why would mint amps matter if he was ditching the heatsinks?

Will you be displaying the guts, heatsinks or neither?

All amps will remain exactly as made by PG. They will simply be mounted inside another shroud like case, rather like the MS2250. It's purely going to be a cosmetic outer case really. But it serves a few purposes:

1. The one large plexi (or glass) surface will protect all the amps, whilst...
2. Showing off the amps guts
3. The hidden fans will aid cooling
4. All the cables will be hidden
5. It will mount like one huge amp, ie just four bolts
6. I may even incorporate a dist block so there is just one mega terminal

I may even have the amp mounted so it can be swiveled up, so you can see the top or bottom of the amps. Remember Bob's BMW boot instal? That is an inspiration

I'm changing cars before my next instal, so in the meantime I will start by making this amp housing. I'll have a fair bit of time on this, which will make a change.

At the moment I'm imagining a thick section of alloy being cnc machined to my layout. All amps will then mount to this chassis, which will be powder coated white.

I am currently undecided which side of the amps will face upwards. It could look like one big amp if all the guts are exposed. But it could also look very understated with just one large bank of gleaming white heat sinks all under glass. Maybe with a logo etched into the glass underside, like the old PG logo, or "MS" or something along those lines. I may design it so the amps can be flipped either way.

consider me subscribed!!!! this sounds like a great idea.

this is just a suggestion that piggy backs off of what you said about the distro blocks.

you could use just the boards or (guts) and on the casing set up a barrier strip for the speaker inputs and terminals for power ground and remote.
then just make them face a way that it would be easy for you to tune them with the casing off. I personally think that would be cool. the whole idea is awesome.

I'll be sketching out a few ideas when I get time. But don't expect many updates until after new years. I have a load of other projects in the way right now.

Anyway, it would be good to see other members custom amps too...

I'll play! Here is my "ZPA 0.8" built from the ground up, the only thing not built by myself is the actual Amplifier boards.

Still not done, but hopefully I will wrap it up soon!

In all honesty, I am not totally "getting" your concept for this MS based amp. It seems to me, that without modifying the sinks, or having a new sink made, that no matter what you do it will look like a bunch of MS amps in a rack. I would love to see some models, or actual photos of the amps arranged like you plan. Anyhow, keep us posted!

gimme a short lil longer and i will have some pretty impressive finishes to show off.

I only have this for the moment- once glass gets in oven I am going to have all sorts of outlaw's, 66's, whole m-series line, 275's- 475's Franked 430's, etc etc etc...

BUT not custom amps- custom finishes.

MAN I wish i could get the silk screening bugs worked out... one thing at a time it'll come together eventually.

BUT this is all i got for right now...

I agree, what I'm doing is more of a cosmetic shroud than some of the beauties posted above. Once I've sketched out a few options I'll post them up for you to debate over

I would guess the cost of having a huge custom sink cnc'd from scratch. Or else paying WAY over the odds for an MS1000 heatsink.

This is why I am going for a simpler route. Also this method gives me flexibility. For example if I ever felt like a change I will be able to swop out my 275's and put in a 2125 instead, or even another 2250. Or if one amp needs a service that can be removed without affecting the rest of the system. Like I said it will be more along the lines of the original 2250 shroud, hiding all the terminals and cables too.

I'm working on a custom with a pair of ti1200.1.

I think you are going to have a problem with only using 4 mounting holes. Probably going to vibrate like a SOB

Not sure if you could phisically move the amps much closer together. With your design you will need to allow room for wires to either go around the amps, or under the rack so do not forget to add that in.
