Please help me!

Post by Eric D »

Well, my Kenwood KDC-X911 in my test bench just took a shit.

I suppose after 12 years of use I can't really complain all that much.

It might just be the ribbon cable, but its behavior is making me think it is more than that.

So, I am asking you guys, what should I do?

Here is an option...

http://cgi.ebay.com/CLARION-DRX9255EX-C ... 45f0fd97a7

Anyone ever see one of these or know anything about them?

they are awesome, ran one for years- no frills though, just a really clean headunit- only 4channel output, no sub- but that is easily dealt with- you should be able to pick one up anywhere between 175.00- and 300.00, if you get the japanese one, it will have to come with a radio frequency adapter as they do not broadcast much past 102mhz-

Any place I can get one other than eBay?

As for the radio I don't use it, and as for 4-channels, I only use 2 on my test bench. Sounds more and more like this would be the ideal unit for me.

Works 100%. 8.5-9/10 cosmetically. It has your standard hairline scratches on the face and chassis from being installed and uninstalled about a million times. Buttons are not worn at all. NOB Remote is unused. I have all the original packing and manual and the cool ESN stickers. Very powerful DSP if you need it. Does not play MP3 but has played every CDR I put in it. It does have both a digital and analog aux. input. Balanced outputs. $165 shipped. Or PM me with an offer/trade. Not sure what I would be looking for, but if you have anything you need to part with, let me know. Sorry for the large photos.

What are the default settings on the Eclipse? As in when you power it on, what position is the loudness, bass, etc in? I shut down my power supply all the time, so any head unit will not retain its settings. When I turn it on, if the defaults require me to change a bunch of settings to get it flat, that would be a pain.

In the case of my Kenwood KDC-X911, the only default setting which was in the way was the loudness was on. After I shut that off, the deck was flat.

I just found I had a spare deck. A Clarion DRX6475. It has great sound, but I ran into another problem with it. The display is optimized to look down on it from the seating position in a car. Since mine is mounted in my test bench above me, the display does not show anything until I stand up.

8053 is a great deck, but memory issues will be a problem with constant powering down- the 9255 has no memory other than channel preset- everything else is analog controlled- till it hits the outboard converter- if you were powered constantly his 8053 is awesome

Also on some Eclipses the ESN will kick in and you need your "boot" CD to unlock it.

There is a way to bypass the ESN but I do not know it.

My old Eclipse was awesome though! Had it for like 10 years and still played great and looked fabulous when I sold it with the car it was in.

Well then at this point I think I need to keep my eye out for one of those old Clarion high end decks, or maybe something like the Denon or Denford units.

Thanks guys for trying to help me.

Ok, so the DRZ9255 is what I should look for then?

$600 is pretty steep for my test bench, but I can always stick it in a car if I ever get another car.

kg1961 please do ask around and see what you can come up with. I would appreciate it.

the drx is every bit as good, and usually available for around 2- where are the z rarely goes below 500- just has internal eq, and crx over, and a sub output- that is about the only real difference- both have outboard power supply and da converters

1) So it will share the same ground as any amp I test (ran into an issue before with the floating ground of home equipment connected)

2) So it has 4V to drive most any amp to clipping.

3) So it fits in the hole I spent a whole day cutting!
