Beautiful passive networks

Post by KUB3 »

Does anyone else have a thing for the look of well made passive x-overs?

I seem to have always liked the look of a few shiny coils and caps all neatly laid out on a board. I recently took delivery of a shiny new toy from Joerg. The old school PG tri-mode passive: XVR2. It looks awesome with gleaming perspex, huge red coil, black caps and anodized little details. It's real eye candy. Looking forward to the matching bnib XVR4 arriving tomorrow hopefully.

Any of you guys have some cool looking retro kit like this?

I like the x-overs on my diamond hex 3ways. It exposes two large coils though the window and is surrounded by a nicely machined top. I would not go as far as to call it beautifull but it is better then the typical plastic box.

the massive crossover on the PPI 356cs is a thing of beauty that I will have on display in my next install. they are giant, with an aluminum base, chrome switches and a clean smoked cover - and the little clip light inside is an added bonus.

Some custom crossover built for a friend of mine (on this forum too).. these are MASSIVE to say the least!

Image

They controlled a set of Focal 121 tweeters (I think that's what they are... they remided me of the TLR tweeters.. old school and about $2.5K!!!) and Dynaudio MW160 midbass drivers.

while it looks good, I would call it a big waste of space as well. Why is it space out so much? just to fill the lid?

I'm not too sure actually. Not my setup to make that call. I know the parts used were pretty solid. All handcrafted, coils were manually wound up and everything. I'm not sure if passive croosovers are built by other means, but the guy that built these for my friend's crossover was quick to mention of the "loving" he put in them :p

I've six passive crossovers of the first gen Diamond hex series, two mid bass and four normal. If that's what you were talking about. There were some off the first fancy crossovers for a speaker set in its price range in their day. I'm not using them in my new system as its active but I still may put them in as show.

Ever looked inside those Crossblock's guys? Also how large are they?

Do you guys think the caps will be ok in my XVR2 & 4 passives? They have PG logo's on them. No sign of dampness though.

Martinkruit's install was the most impressive I have seen. All hand made passive crossovers, time delay networks, etc. He competes in EMMA SQ in europe. Definitely one of the coolest installs I have ever seen!

There are pictures somewhere on this forum, but I can't find the thread...

mm, she is mine ,pic looks worst then the finished product , it's not bolted to the interior, it;s a custom panel that holds the passives on the one side and the EQ on the other.

Spanks , goes with the theme in the boot where the 2 amps are in a V formation as well.
