Who makes a musical 8 inch driver for music?

Post by STROKD »

My Corvette has some fat 8" front speakers and I love the mid bass they produce... I dont think they are that great, so using them in my system isn't really a thought, but does Focal, Dyn, CDT, or someone of the sort make a great 7-8" driver that produces a ton of mid bass without giving up any music in the midrange? I have 6.5" Utopias, and I was going to use those, but I'd rather save them for my daily since my Vette is sorta loud, and the noise floor is high enough that the speaker would be a waste in there I think.

Any ideas? I dont have room to run a large driver AND a mid bass speaker, not even a 4... I am not going to cut the car up for anything seriously custom like that...

Focal has some 7inch drivers. But those are for home audio. Never the less they sound great!!!

Other than that i know about the Orion XTR8MB. Those are awesome midbass´s.

And another try might be rainbow. But no experience with them personally

I believe the Morel Elate and or PG Elite 9" mids may fit also with little or no modification to your Vette.

Would be cheaper, and I can run them in a custom active setup, with either some CDT tweeters I have or the large TN-52s from my Focal Utopia kit. Or I could find some other tweeters, like the ribbon style Focals, but those are like 1000 bucks. I dont like the JL tweeters at all, but I have always liked their woofers ok.

I used to run CDT ES 06 mid bass. They are astounding. Equally impressive is the CDT QES 8" sub, which will blend in with these mids perfectly. I sold my last system with the car but I ordered all new 2010 (black chassis model) CDT ES drivers. I hope to instal them shortly.

Out of half a dozen SQ subs I tried back to back, the CDT EuroSport was by far the best: amazingly accurate, with plenty of low end extension, decent output, all from a compact driver in a small sealed box. The only downside is the very high price. If I won the lottery I'd still plan a no limits system around CDT ES mid-bass and sub drivers.

So your stock stereo has an 8" and a tweet? Interesting... 8" comp sets are quite rare. Are you looking to replace it with a full comp set and amps, or are you just looking for drop in speakers that sound a bit nicer?

For a good drop in replacement, look no further than these:

For the price they are amazing. They play smoothly up to 2kHz, so you would need to mate them with a big dome tweeter to go for a full range active setup, like this one:

Dynaudio makes some 8" speakers that are exactly what I was looking for... going to go with those since I used to sell Dyn and LOVE the way they sound on all types of music.

Thanks guys for the suggestions!

What part # is that? I looked on CDTs site and didnt see an 8... this would be cheaper than the Dyn setup I found and I have 5s and 6s in the HD line, so my rear fill would match perfect this way... :hurr:

NewOldStock, I just talked to CDT, and he divuldged that they are releasing an 8" HD line midrange large woofer next month! told me only about 250 a pair too, so I think since I have 3 sets of HDs already, and had planned to run these in the back as rear fill that I will just go ahead and try these HD8s out... also said they have a component system coming, but I don't really need that since I am running it active. this is great news :hurr:

Ditto, from the things I've heard. If they are anything like my L6's, very good.

I have used Dynaudio since 1995, in both my car systems and currently with Dynaudio Focus in my home hifi. They are great - nice and smooth with some extention. But the mid bass and especially sub bass is not in the same league as CDT ES (EuroSport) for in car use. In both quantity, extention and sheer impact. As much as I love Dyn's they simply haven't progressed at all in the last decade. They could do with releasing a new range of mid-bass and subs with greater xmax.

Nice!

I use the EF-80 - they are a great speaker. unfortunately I didnt know they sold a DVC version so I have the single 4-ohm. I would love to sell these and get the DVC's but finding someone to buy a set of 8's is rough and I just cant justify buying new ones without selling these first.

What speakers do you have? Whats an EF-80? Is that a Euro line? CDT guy said they didnt make an 8" Euro...

KU83, how does the Dyns mid bass compare to a Focal? My dad has some older K2s in his car running purely off a ZPA0.3, and they make your leg shake... thats the kinda mid bass Im after! :hurr: If the dyns cant get me there, Ill run my Utopias and hope for the best.

they consider them a subwoofer - but they really shine as a midbass.

The CDT "help" department is freaking useless. Don't bother asking anything. They take days to reply then don't answer fully.

The top of the line used to be called EuroSport, or ES for short. But for some random reason the new 2010 model of subs had the initial code changed from ES to QES just to confuse everyone. The subs are identical, just black. So the name change was utterly pointless.

Any driver with a C or F in the name is entry level kit.

You hit the nail on the head with your trouser flapping observations. My old Dynaudio 7" only just managed it. My CDT ES06 pounded my leg like a sub! Not surprising when you realise the xmax is huge.

Please note: on CDT mid drivers there are different models: something with just a number is a pure midrange (4), something with a zero in front is a beefy mid-bass (06), anything with a plus at the end is a subwoofer not a midbass (06+). My drivers are CDT ES06.

Dynaudio speakers are still my favorite at home though. They do drop well for a home speaker. But I also use a Peerless home sub as well.
