MbQuart QTD-25 alternative

Post by ShockTherapy »

Hi everyone! I haven't decided anything yet so I needed some opinions. My QSD-216 component set is installed and I really don't feel like pulling it out. Is there a nice silk or softdome tweeter that would be a good replacement for the QTD-25? I need it to be shallow or at least flush mount and be the same size or a little larger than the Quarts so that I can use the hole in my door panels to accomadate them. I've looked into the DLS Iridiums but they are too deep... and i wouldnt even know if they are compatible or not. Your opinions would be appreciated.

keep the qrt- its a great speaker- tone down the crossover and enjoy- I have several of these and they are great- you could buy some ridiculous focal utopia speaker and I doubt it would be 10% better, and you would have spent 2500 for a pair of tweeters- my opinion of course-

I have owned these for a few years and have adjusted the tweeter level from -1 all the way to -6. While -6 sounds decent it still seems to lack that sparkle. I have them mounted off-axis. Titanium is just not for my ears. I've heard some of the scanspeak tweeters as well as the Morel and Dynaudio tweeters and they sound fantastic and less fatiguing.

I've got a set of the QTD's as well as some Dyn MD100's. I will admit that I have two different setups in the truck and car, but I've always lived my dyn's!!! I guess that's why I've had them in the car since 97!!!

The MD100's or 102's are just slightly larger but the biggest thing is the impedance difference. If I remember correctly the 100's are around 3.4 ohms and the QTD's are 6.3. It could cause havoc if you drop in the Dyn's using the Quart crossover. If you are running active you've got nothing to worry about, short of a little gain adjustment.

Another option could be one of the Hertz hi-energy series of tweeters. They've got a few different drivers in a few sizes that may work great for you.

This may sound silly, but cutting the phase plug (star shaped structure over the tweeter) off has been known to radically improve how smooth these tweeters sound. You might be able to find a good deal on just the tweeters at eBay, which you could cut on and not worry about trashing your nice set.

This may be pretty hopeless, but you could contact MB Quart and ask about a set of replacement diaphragms for your current speakers. I think the phase plug comes with the tweeter dome and voice coil all as one assembly. You could then remove your originals and put the new ones with a cut plug in their place. There is a chance they have them in stock somewhere and they might not be too expensive.

after you cut the phase plug glue a peice of silk inside your grille and that will smooth them out even more.

i did both of these to mine and they are very nice!!!

Your guess is as good as mine. I sure would hate to cut up good tweeters, but if you can get replacement parts it would not be a big issue.

That is an option but how is that supposed to make a difference? its just a piece of plastic which doesnt even make contact with the tweeter. I'm having a hard time understanding how removing the plastic will improve things? If it will work I will do it! but hmm... I just don't get it. and as for the piece of silk behind the grille wouldn't that interfere with the performance of the tweeter? grrrrr. i just wish i could find some nice 6ohm silk domes that would serve my purpose.

the sheer fact that they on not that prolific should tell you something- either they do not endure the environment of the auto- or too expensive to manufacture- or since everything in the auto is either sound absorbing, or hyper reflective, that the silk dome is probably not the way to go- I have four silk domes in my installation, but have 10 titanium domes as well-

That's funny... I was just looking at that Vifa tweeter yesterday. although it looks nice I think I'm steering towards the Morel MT-23 tweeters. I've heard these in the Elate line and they sounded fantastic. I'm not sure I'm going to do this yet but so far this is my option.
