System Planning

Post by jbob0124 »

Im trying to plan out my system. I have most of what I need, but I'm thinking of getting a few more things, just not sure what exactly lol. I have 2 xmax 12's and a set of 6.5 elite's and an eq232. I also have 2 zpa0.3's and a tantrum 1200.1 with a tld66 for the zpa's. I want to use all zpa's so I don't really want to run the tantrum for the subs.

My first question, Would you buy another .3 and use one for each sub and one for the elite's, or would you buy one zpa0.5 for the subs and use one .3 for the elites.

Second question, to beef up the mid range, would you try and find a pair of xmax 8's or a pair of elite 9's. I would want to run those off of one of the .3's

I would get rid of the T1200.1 as they are not fixable when broken.

I would get a third 0.3 and run one 0.3 to the right side of Elite 6.5s and one 0.3 to the left side of Elite 6.5s, then the third to your subs.

At that point you might not even need more mid bass, as the Elite 6.5s will have plenty of clean power.

I didn't realize the 6.5's could handle that much...would one .3 be enough for the 2 12's?

Also, forgot to ask about the tld66. Would it be better to find one of the tba's instead of using the tld66 or would it not be noticeable?

Another question, would a zpa0.5 be sufficient on the 6.5 elites or would you still recommend the 2 zpa0.3's (one on each side)?

IMO, if you put a 0.5 on the components, and one 0.3 on each of your subs, then you would have a killer setup as well.

I like LOTS of power on my components. I then back off the gains and keep the amp from hitting clipping. Never blew a speaker this way, and don't get any distortion either. I routinely direct people towards 400W a channel on components and never had anyone complain about blowing them.

Well, reason why I ask is because I now have 2 zpa0.5's to go along with the 2 zpa0.3's . Im sure I will end up selling one of the .3's after I receive the .5's in the mail.

Why sell it?

Hold on to it if you can.
Just in case the other one goes down you have a replacment while you get it fixed.

One reason I'd sell is to help myself justify buying one of the .5's. A second reason, one of the .3's is white and the other three are all black. Although, you make a good point

The only caveat I would mention is that the neodymium magnets in the Ti components can demagnetize over time if you feed them a lot of power like that. Yes they can handle it, and no they won't blow, but Bfowler has had to replace a few sets of the midranges after they got "weak". With mine running on 75w for 5 years now I haven't noticed any issues like he had.

That makes sense. I love how neo allows for tight installations, but I doubt I personally would ever own any neo speakers.

Arent the morels a neo-ferrite hybrid just like the other companies that use the same type of motor, like Dyn and DLS. I know DLS is a hybrid neo-ferrite and I think the Dyn is the same way.

also anything like speaker will lose some force/impact as they get older.
speaker are one thing that are not made to last.
some item will go bad just having it sit on the shelf :-$ for get adding alot of power to them

I have always been on the side that you can blow a speaker with too little power much easier then with too much power. More power to the speaker will make it run hotter, but sending it too little power just pushes them into clipping I run my diamond audio 3-ways off of a diamond audio D9 800.4 bi-amped to make sure they have plenty of power and could not be happier with it.

Now a .5 for the left and one for the right makes mine look like micky mouse.......
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

I guess I will have to wait and see what it sounds like, but I would think a .5 per side would be a waste of a .5. Im not saying that the elites couldn't handle it, but I would think that extra power could go elsewhere.

Well, I've heard a setup of a 0.3 running a pair of Xmax 12s and the 0.5 running a pair of Dyn System 360 splits. Sounded unbelievable! I've got the guy's Xmax subs now.... and I WISH I had his amps... but I've got 6 x old Alpine V12 amps.. that's enough :p The 0.3 would've been plenty for the subs. A 0.3 PER sub.. even sweeter. 0.5 amps will definitely give you plenty of headroom up front. that's for sure. 2 of them... overkill, but that's just me. :p
