Thinking about going back to a 2 way

Just to make things easier and I'm not 100% satisfied, but who is, w/the 3 way set up. Don't get me wrong, it's the best sounding set up I've ever had, but I feel there's room for improvement. I also would like to get a new set of comps too.
For some reason Clarion of Canada has the better line of speakers by Clarion. I've owned a few Clarion comp sets in my time and they all sounded awesome. I found these
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio ... 1620M.aspx
and am wondering if I should get these or the Eclipse 3 way. W/the Clarion set I can still go active. I've heard good things about the SRP/SRU lines from Clarion.
What do you guys think??

I'd like to hear them and see if they're any different then RSDc's they replace. I know how the Clarions sound.

those look really nice and spec out pretty good but if your using the zx450 to go active they may not handel it. the speakers are 70 watts rms and the 450 goes to 75 watts rms maybe even more.

They'll handle it. It's the passive xover that warrants the lower power. Clarion rates their speakers in an odd way compared to most. Their "peak" power rating is what they also call their "music" power rating. In other words, you can give them 250 watts of music or 70 watts of a tone. Make sense? Morel did it the same way at one point. These are the tweets that they sell separately that handle 100 watts.
A ZX450 portion of the Reactor benched at 111 x 4 @ 4 ohms.
It's not that I'm after Canadian made speakers, it's more that I'm a Clarion buff and it's their Canada branch that has the better speakers. I would love the SSS601 set, but a bit more then I can afford now w/o a job. I think I might pull the plug on it and get the ones in the link.

i my self have had a hard time finding the right balance while going active using the 450. first i used the zero point speakers the tweeters and 5's ran active while they would handel the power it seemed they wanted more. so then i tryed some mb quart music comp's they were louder but couldnt handle the power.

i dont know if this will help but a had a hell of a time getting onlinecarstereo to ship an order. i was told several times either it was shipped and give it a day for the tracking to show up in ups system or its going out today. they sent me an email with tracking a day after i placed the order but it took them over a week to give it to ups.

x2 do not use onlinecarstereo
Same bait and switch BS and never did send anything. I ended up cancelling the order and demanding a refund.

If you're running active, why not get speakers that don't have a ton of engineering put into the crossover? Get some speakers that were designed to sound good without one! For example the SEAS Excels, ScanSpeak Revelators, etc. You can pick and choose your mid and tweet combo, depending on what you prefer. If you like softer tweeters, how about some Morel Supremos? Etc. Etc.
Car audio speakers designed around a crossover often have nasty resonances in the mid or tweeter, which are corrected by notch filters in the crossover. The more advanced a component set is, generally the worse they seem to sound when run actively. For example I can't make the Ti Elite 6.5's sound nearly as good when run actively.

perfect way to explain it ive noticed the same thing when trying to tune speakers with very complex passive crossovers while running them active. it seems like no matter what i did it was very hard to get them to blend together sounded like gremlins in my speakers.

I give another vote for the revelators. I have been wanting to try a set of those for a while.

It comes down to the $$ on hand. I have just enough for the Clarions and have been eyeballing them for some time, about as long as the SSS601's. The crossover that clarion uses is the standard affair 12 dB/oct slope w/a bulb for tweeter protection.
I've been looking at others like scanspeak, but due to the $$ I have...

the wife doesn't know about so my payment options are limited to PayPal. I just might go do some more browsing at parts-express. See if they take PP yet.

I don't know what system they're using for measurement, metric I assume so I'm stuck trying to figure out what the sizes are in inches. For tweets I found these for a start.
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... cts_id=794
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id=1466
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id=8780 What power rating?
For mids
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id=8234
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... ts_id=8405 8 ohms though
Anyone heard and/or heard of Silver Flute? They look good in the response!
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/produc ... cts_id=846
So what are your guys thoughts? I kinda like the $10 tweets and the $20 mids. $60 for the whole set up.

Silver Flute W17RC38-04 ohm 6-1/2" Wool Cone
seems cheep ....
Wool coned...
will that make my mid bass itchy???

all of those look like the right ones to go with they would be more revealing and more open sounding than most speakers. but i would try to go with the ones with the most power handeling that first tweeter looks promising at 90 watts long term power handeling. on the mid i would try something in the same power handeling range as the tweets.

I emailed Madisound about that tweeter, if it turns out to be 50+ watts I'm probably going to get them and the Silver Flutes.
I'm scared about the Flutes as it almost seems to good to be true, and you know what they say about that.
What do we know about Vifa? They seem decent.

I went ahead and bit the bullet. I ordered these.
I figure at $10 a tweet I could afford to gamble on them. If they turn out to suck I'll probably save up to get one of the others.
I went w/the Silver Flutes

Their graph and imp rise looks better then the Peerless ones, plus their output was a bit higher.

the thing about vifa is their lower level mids are just that lower level almost like factory car speakers. their upper level mids are real good but the price is higher than most of the mids that are the same quality.

By the way, if you are running your speakers out of phase, make sure you check out the 30 or 60 degree graphs instead of the 0 degree (in phase) response. Generally home audio speakers are designed to play in phase and will roll off much earlier when mounted off axis (e.g. in doors).
There seem to be lots of good reviews about the silver flutes, especially due to how tame they are at the upper reaches of their frequency range. Most other stiff coned speakers will ring around 3-4kHz, while these are much softer.
I would be partial to the SEAS 27TFFNC/G, which are great crossed over at 2.5-3kHz. Those do need to be mounted on-axis for best results, or you will lose 10kHz-20kHz.

Well that's good to hear about the Flutes.
I'll experiment w/the angle and position of the tweets before the final make up starts. Due to the WAY early roll off, I'm going to try and aim off of the windshield, see how that sounds.

Yea, I remember you telling me that. If I have the extra $$ left over (when ever it gets here) I might see if you could grab me a set if he still has any at that time.

VIFA makes sweet tweeters ( ask oldskoolmseriesfan about the free pair he got from me. )

, when it comes to mids though you could go with Dayton and be happier.
and as said, they will need to be mounted on-axis to get the full effect.
I would go for what Tom is saying though, SEAS, Morel, ScanSpeak.....that's where it's at.
