I've just seen these on ebay and was going to buy them but wanted to get some feed back first.

What would cause the rubber surrounds to wrinkle like this?

How much will this effect the performance of the speakers?

Thanks.

I have heard that they had some issues peeling on some. This is either a badly attached one or one hell of a bad speaker....

brake cleaner would do that

over excursion? its a soft surround, but that is ridiculous.

my guess....they beat the CRAP out of that speaker.

the neo magnet got hot, lost its ability to control the voice coil, and it has been over extending to the point it stretched the surround.

if you are still thinking of buying them, ask for a pic of the spider from the side of the speaker, and make sure its flat (not the waves on the spider themselves, but that it doesn't sink in or stick up

and yes, if they did indeed heat up the neo magnet, it will have basically NO output below 100hz

i did this to mine :( (not nearly as visually drastic in the surround, but my output is still missing)

Looks like it might have had the surround re-attached then from this pic.

BIN is $115 shipped.

Worth it maybe? :hmm:

I have a extra Elite X-over and was thinking on adding another set of mids to the install.

Just seen this after my above post.

Poor little guys. Just abused. :violin:
I guess that price is way not worth it.

it does look like there is glue smeared down below the surround. Maybe an total hack newb tried to glue it back together and didn't keep the speaker flat while doing so?

I wouldn't. Not for $115. You can get a set of 5 1/4"s new for just a bit more on ebay.

I know this was originally about 6's, but the 5's aren't that far off. I too, would rather have 6's over 5's but I'd rather pay a bit more for something I know was in good condition, though not my preferred size, then something that was the size I wanted and crap.

Just wanted to clarify that.

I am looking to put my newly purchased 3 way set with 5's to use! I too would have prefered the 6 but didn't want to move my tweeters from my kicks and I while I currently have a 4 there, I have just enough space for the 5.

If you are only looking for one, if you wanted to buy a new set, I would split it with you to have an extra for "just in case"....

if you are not using them I think there are others on here that would. I would even consider it incase I do not like the 5 or to add in addition to the 5.

From what I understand with the numbers on the 6 you just HAVE to have them in an enclosure as they will not do well in a free air or door environment. When put in a door I understand they have no mid-bass, hmm I already have a baffle with an enclosure made for a 6 in my door now :hmm: ....

Yea post pics please!
