WOW!!!
I have heard the rest and now the best. Really these AVI speakers rock out SQ crazy style.
The M50 I purchased from MHyde like 6 months ago and just left it on a shelf until now. I replaced the caps and gave a little clean up to knock the dust off. Of course perfect as advertised from MHyde.
The speaker test was really intense. It was a combination of crossovers and different tweeters tested. The crossovers were a old German MB Quart Q system and an Alpine Type-X Pro. The tweeters were AVI HX-13N, PG RSd, and MBQ PTK-40 widesphere (6 Ohm). All of these items are pretty top notch, minus the budget RSd tweets. The mids stayed constant with AVI LX-160s.
For the newbies my test bench has a 14v power supply good for 50A and an older Alpine HU. Good for basement work outs.
I started with the MBQ Q crossovers and PTK-40 tweets thinking this would be the baseline of excellence... It sounded awesome! Great crisp highs from the PTKs that will rip your ears apart (you either love or hate MBQ tweets - I love). The mids are like always on time and the best mids I have ever heard. Next I switched to the AVI tweets... Pretty smooth and clear, definately lacked the edge that the PTKs had. Then switched to the RSd tweets... Sorry but the RSds got owned. Not bad tweets, but just out of their league here. The crossover was made for a 6 Ohm tweeter so the 4 Ohm tweets were at a little disadvantage here.
Next up I switched the crossover to the Alpine Type-X Pro. I started with the PTKs which did a great job as always. Then I went over to the AVIs. WOW the crossovers made these come alive. The crossovers actually widened the sound stage and added to the clarity of the space, sorry if that does not make sense but it the sound seemed wider and fuller at the same time. Quite honestly I have never seen a crossover make such a difference in sound before.
I should state that the M50 was spot on and the music was LOUD and clear the whole time. No bass boost dialed in at all and maybe 50% gain. 75% up on the Alpine HU... So yes it was LOUD. Did I mention crystal clear?
In summary the combination of the AVI speakers with the Alpine crossovers is the best component set I have ever heard... And I am an old schooler who has seen a lot of systems.
This winter these will be headed into my 911, but I need to redo the door panels completely... So it will be a while before install shots are taken.
