ZPA 0.5 WALL ART- LIGHTS ARE IN- FINISHED!

Post by mhyde71 »

okay fella's some of you might take a liking to this- while others may not...BUT here's the deal...

I have an unpopulated 0.5 board... as seen below...

I also have a burned up zpa board in chassis... seen below...

HERE IS MY INTENT/PLAN:

remove burned out board. <done>

and return with the new unpopulated board...
Also re-coat the zpa chassis (to buyers desired color- i can do OEM black wrinkle if desired- or as it was suggested to me to do/use like a chrome color so it would twinkle sparkle a lil better)
I personally think that perhaps keeping the plastic end caps off and possibly even the fans off/out would be good idea as you would be able to see more of the rare unpopulated board-
AND maybe some small led's in/under there as well to light things up a bit... which i have an idea about that---but lets not put the horse in front of the carriage.... one thing at a time.

Idea behind this piece would be just wall art. An unpopulated board is prolly like super duper rare and would like to see it in the chassis as a show piece... now, like i said, lights could come into the equation, or whatever...

SO WHAT COMES ABOUT FROM ALL THIS:

Well I will have some ZPA 0.5 parts for sale-
i.e. xover card, end plates, plastic caps, etc etc (be sure to check buy/sell section as i will post those pieces available in there)
BURNT BOARD may already bre spoken for- but wont know until i hear back...

BUT HERE AND NOW, I just wanted to show off the begining stages of this project, put bug in you perspective buyers' ears, and once i get organized with it a lil more- and stuff- i will post up the specific parts i have availavle for sale in the classified section.

NOW this piece ALSO will be and is for sale- kind of the intent here,
but i REALLY dont want to coat it until i have buyer and he/she tells me what color they would like the chassis.

The last picture indicates a proposed location for back lighting with LED's
which IYAM should really make it pop!

BUT any and all suggestions would be, and as always are, welcome... i.e. color options, lighting options... leaving fans in or out... or maybe making sure the fans point outward and make it into a wall air freashner by putting some fresh scents under the chassis... (hehe) -

OR how's this.. put a thermometer on the left over fan grill and matching clock on the other side??? :hmm: :hmm:

the popssibilities are endless-

IMO- i would say go with a chrome finish on chassis so it would reflect any lighting much much better, and bounce off the gold better too... OR if nbot that then OEM wrinkle black- Which i stock also. so those would be my two color suggestions.. and you can see in last pic.. that would be my suggestion for lighting. NOW with the lighting inplace... i would then also suggest a plexi from Jason etched out real nice....but these are just my thoughts..... how much you ask? wel ldepends on what all the buyer would like to have in it as an end result.... PM me - you prespective buyers- and we can talk... this will be the thread in which i show/share the progress of the project.

^^ THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE IT.... Thanks Itchy

but also knew that it wouldnt be stampeded for by the fella's...BUT certainly is a unique piece, and prolly only unpopulated 0.5 board around... PLUS I also have an unpopulated 0.3- AND would love love love to make a matching set of brother sister un-pop boards in chassis- so i am also on look out for 0.3 chassis.

SO anyways... the question is, and now that you have expressed an interest in becoming the buyer...

what do you think about color, lights, OEM finish, or something different...? keeping the platic end caps on... and if so should we look into filling the holes/slots in with the proper parts/components on the board to fill in the holes on the plastic caps... know what i mean??

i mean like if we were to put the plastic end caps on they would have empty hole spots... like where the rca's go, or the power terminals, etc etc... should we look into maybe getting just those specific pieces that will fill in the end caps onto the board?

OR just leave board virgin as virgin can be...?

I say either way....BUT perhaps the ladder would be best... and maybe not even have the plastic end caps...? so you can see board better.

can you polish the traces left on the board? YOu can probably just glue some high grit sandpaper on a piece of wood and then carefully buff it.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

^ uh well not sure i would want to chance scratching or sanding the fiberglass base... with the sandpaper on piece of wood... know what i mean?>

I did take some brite-shine and cleaned up all the gold, and would do so once again prior to buttoning it up... but sandpaper - eh i would be lil sketchy about that- you think it wouldn't compromise the fiberglass board around and underneath the gold??

the traces are on top of the glass right? as long as the piece it is mounted to is good and flat you should never touch the board under it. You could probably use a 1500 grit and then 2000 even for just a few mins and it would make those shine so nice.

Matt, please don't do anything to the gold on the board. Since the gold is just plated on there, if you buff, or sand, or try anything else it will just wear right though the gold and make the board look like crap.

yeah i hear ya- TBH i would be and am nervous about doing it anyways- so i think i would skip that sanding / buffing process. prolly just keep it the way it is- i mean perhaps it would work... but now given erics comment about it only being plated and prolly not that thick of a plating at that- i would be cautious/concerned about having sand paper which ever the grit, around the board and gold traces-

IN THE EVENT that whomever it is that ends up with this their hands that they may end-up at having an attempt at actually building amp up from the ground with it- and wouldnt want to compromise that effort if it were ever to come-about -

my intent is to just make a nice piece of wall art- the buyer will and may have other ideas with the board and ultimately do other things when/if they get it.

Matt!

Boy I've got something that might spark your interest!

Ok so here's the deal. I purchased a custom chrome plated ZPA 0.5 from JOMA a couple of years ago (before I new he was pretty much a scumbag) The amp has been torn down for a while now, just waiting for a cap replacement. Well for quite some time now I've wanted to contact you about refinishing this with the oem black wrinkle. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's pheasible to powdercoat over chrome. I haven't been in a huge rush to get this done since the ZPA collection won't be installed untill I pick up my next vehicle. So I see this thread and figure it's the perfect time to talk about this. The chrome is not bad, but there are a few spots here and there that aren't perfect. I'll take a few pics sometime today. I'ld like to send this to you. This way you can check it out for your project and see if it's actually what you'ld like before paying for plating. If the finish is nice enough for you maybe we can work something out. If not, then I'ld still be more than happy to pay you to refinish it to it's original black wrinkle.

So what do ya think?

^^ okay-
sounds good. Yes you can coat over chrome... but the chrome has to be next to perfect if not perfect- i.e no bubles, blem's, etc and should be okay- BUT and lemme see if i understand correctly... that you would like it returned to oem black wrinkle? or some thing dofferent im not clear on that- BUT yes- black wrinkle will be in the hopper here shortly and will also be restoring a zpx2 and that will eventually be for sale too- if you are looking for one anyways.

I have three other ZPA's so yes indeed I'm looking for the oem black so they all match. So here's a couple pics, although its nearly impossible to tell the condition. I trust your judgment whether or not to go ahead and refinish it (if you don't want to keep it for yourself ) Shoot me a pm with your address and I should be able to get this out to you early this comming week.

Thanks!

It's certainly not perfect. You can imagine my disappointment when I received it from JOMA :x

At least Matt will be able to scope out the chrome for his project and hopefully help with his choices.

I'll get it out this week. Just shoot me your address.

We can decide what to do once you receive it and see for yourself. From the research I've done in the past, I'm not sure if the chrome can even be blasted off.... not without it being a nightmare anyway. I guess the best way to strip chrome is to use essentially an acid bath or something similar. I'm not expecting you to have this capability nor am I asking you to do this though. Rather, I'm pretty much willing to pay you to coat it anyway. Even if the surface isn't perfect, I won't hold you responsible for any flaws. I know you'll give it your best shot and that's all I'm asking. The chrome absolutely will not work for me so it's worth the risk. So basically take a look at it and at some point (really no rush at all) give me an estimate, I'll pay you, and coat it.

Thanks man!

beautiful man really beautiful... its amazing how well the oem wrinkle looks when it is new ! wholly shit... i will have to re-do the bottom piece. I didnt have a lot of powder for the parts and was trying to stretch the powder and just didnt make it on the bottom piece all that well as far as coverage is concerned,... but still have a zpx2 to do as well so no prob, plus shawn's zpa as well when it gets in- so/but i will have powder by then

Looks really cool. Reminds me of a Millennium Falcon model I did as a kid that had a lit cockpit and gunner turrets.
