Caps replacement on ZX450 & ZPA 0.5

Post by Jerome »

Hello,
i have 2 ZX450 and a ZPA0.5, and i will change the caps on the tree. But i won't be aty home for the next two weeks, so i can't watch on the amps what i need. If you guys knows how many and what for caps i need to do the job, it would be just perfect, so i can order them and do the job as soon as i come back home. Thanks a lot.

i've counted, in my ZX450 :
#1: 4x 2200µF 16V which are 18mm big and 35mm high (on the right)
#2: 4x 2200µF 50V which are 22mm big and 27mm high (behind the RCA/filter card)

i don't know if it is the same on the second one?

For the ZPA
#3: 12x 2200µF 16V which are 18mm big and 36mm high (near the power plugs)
#4: 2x 4700µF 35V which are 30mm big and 32mm high
#5: 2x 10000µF 50V which are 50mm big and 36mm high

I assume #1 and #3 are the same.
Does anybody have Digikey reference numbers for all those? i don't to make a mistake... Thanks !

Are you very sure of your sizes? They need to be exact measurements, using a caliper.

For #1 and #3, these are the usual replacements:

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

It may also be possible to fit a taller replacement:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

Are you sure about your measurements for #2? In a recent thread I thought they may be 25x30mm:
http://phoenixphorum.com/zx450-rail-cap ... 17077.html
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

If they are 22x30mm then this is what you want:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

#4 is usually 35x35mm:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

As for #5, I cannot find any capacitors 50x36mm?? I have never seen any caps like that before!

it is late here... so i can't mesure again. but i used a caliper. tomorrow, i will take some pictures and give the measurement... but i'm pretty sure of what i say. what i call 'big' is the diameter.

but thanks a lot for your help!!!!

In the ZX450 there are 4 rail caps and 4 of the other ones. The height is the same as Jerome measured.

I am replacing my rail caps and the other ones tomorrow. As Stipud said, the 4 skinny ones are the usual suspects and the part numbers are all over this site.

For the Rail think i measured them wrong and ordered the wrong size. I will check them out tomorrow and make sure. I had measured a diameter as 25mm but they are 22 mm. These look to be the correct ones.

so, lets see....
i will need 20 (12 for the zpa, and 2x 4 for the zxs) :
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

8x : http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR for the zx's

2x http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR for the ZPA

for the 2 other (10 000µF / 50V), i measured again : 35mm wide, 35mm high. i was wrong!!
may i use those??

For the powersupply capacitors, I recommend the Panasonics or the other Nichicons more (they are just better capacitors for not too much extra money):
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

Same thing for the 50V caps... you meant 35x40mm right? I would suggest these:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... ND&Site=FR

Also, for the 35V caps... if you can fit 40mm, you should use 40mm for these as well, since that will get you even more capacitance (more capacitance is always better):

Re: Caps replacement on ZX450 & ZPA 0.5

Sorry it took so long to put these up but someone may benefit from these in the future. I am mainly doing this to cover rail cap removal and replacement parts and sizes. For the In the ZX 350 power supply, I used the standard phorum replacement (4 ea) 493-1804-ND 16V, 5600 uf caps to replace the 2200 uf originals. I replaced the rail caps with the P6675-ND ones listed above. They are 2200 uf and just barely squeeze in there.

Below are pics of the recap of one of the ZX450's. I started with the power supply caps, then I did the rail caps. For the power supply, I used the standard phorum replacement 493-1804-ND 16V, 5600 uf caps to replace the 2200 uf originals. I used the bigger P6678-ND for the rail caps which upped individual capacitance by 1100 uf per cap and 4400 uf increase total. This is a 50% increase. I know these rarely leak but figured it costs like 12 bucks extra for amp and I am in there anyways.

Image
Here is a pic with the P/S caps removed. They did not appear to have leaked.

Here are the new p/s caps next to the old one.

Here is the rail cap board removed and the new 3300 uf cap sitting next to the old ones. A bit of advice removing the board. There are 6 pins you need to de-solder. They are tiny and I actually found it helpful to add a bit of solder to them before solder sucking the solder off. I used a spring loaded solder sucker and it took a few tries to get the pins totally clean. I then very gently rocked the board back and forth in order break the silicone loose under the rail caps that fix then to the pc board. Make sure you put a bit back on there when replacing them.

Here are the new ones are stuffed into the rail cap board. Meaty!!!!!!

All done!

For future refs on caps for zpa 05 I picked the

P6692-nd 120000uf 50v they are 35mm w 45mm h
p6668-nd 150000uf 35v 30mm x 45mm
493-1544-nd 6800uf x 7.5mm x 40mm

The 35v caps need to be no larger than 30mm width not enough room in the middle. Seems to be room to go up to 45mm in height on the zpa. Im also putting the 6800 x 16v in a zx 500 looks like they will fit.

Alot of highend gear have been using the panasonic "fc" series caps in them. For my zpa's and Nt's I used the 10,000uf @16v 18x35mm on the power supply and pana "ha" series 6800uf on the rails. The zpas can REALLY benefit from swaping out the power supply fets from the ifrz44's to irfz48's, it will help protect the zpas power supply from frying due to volt sag on real powerful bass notes..also "delta" fans makes a couple of badass 15x80mm fans that blow way more air than stock, for that extra airflow thats needed, like here in the southern states. Also very important, check the DC OFF-SET AND THE BIAS SETTINGS, there is a how to on this kickass forum. Just search "dc-offset", it was wrote by "1moreamp", that guy knows these and all pg amps inside and out. GL and enjjoy that zpa!
