Best Midbass you've heard

Post by ShockTherapy »

I'm curious about you guys' opinions on midbass drivers. What are some drivers you've heard that really impressed you? I've just purchased some Hybrid Audio Legatia L-4 mids to replace mt CDT ES-4 mids and am looking into a nice replacement for the ES-6 midbass' I have now. I'm replacing the midbass speakers so I can sell my CDT Eurosport 3-way set complete. Let me know what you think. There are some real SQ fanatics on here so let me know what impressed you in the past.

For me that would probably be the Mpyre 65M's/Adire Extremis/Koda, Tang Band's underhung 6.5's, Tang Band Neo's or the RSDC woofers. Of course the Ti9M's are fantastic too, but I am guessing you don't want to carve up your doors.

An oldie but a goodie:

I also forgot to mention that I will not be enclosing these in an enclosure. they will be free air in my doors. I do have the doors heavily deadened and for the most part sealed up. I was looking at some scanspeaks but can't afford the revelators. not sure about the other speaks. I've also heard that the Peerless SLS midbass is nice. hmm. keep the suggestions comin. I have no way of hearing any of these so I'm trying to go off of honest educated opinions. I would like them to be 4ohm as well which knocks out a lot of my selection.

I gotta say my Hybrid L6's are awesome. I run them from 80@24 db/octave up to 4k on my MS2250 TA. I beat on them and they never miss a beat. Wonderful midbass and no discernible IM. I find myself hearing bass lines that I never heard before in a lot of classic rock. Great tonality and they blend really well with my IDQ 10's. Scott Buwalda is great to deal with also. I am pre-ordering my L3SE's tomorrow as an early Christmas gift to myself ;) I can only imagine what the midbass will be like running them from 80-250 ish...

Call Scott and see if he has a used set. He has a trade up program and since they just came out with the L6 SE's he should have some used L6 sets available that were traded in.

will do! thanks for the info. I would love to run the L4 mids with the L6 midbass. That would be awesome! I know the trade in value of these isnt anywhere near retail so I hope to score. Thanks man.

No prob. man. If you run the L4's on axis or close to it you don't need much in terms of a tweeter either as they go pretty high. This is nice because you can then use a really small format tweeter which gives you lots of flexibility with mounting .

which range are you gonna run? for 80-250Hz, my best experience was a pair of Focal 6W1 (woofer from the old utopia serie) per door. each door on a channel of Brax x2000 graphic edition... it was damn LOUD but very clean.

(setup was 2 xmax 12 in trunk on a x2000 GE bridged, then 2 focal 6w1 per door on another X2000 GE, then for mids, a focal 4K Slim and a focal TBE tweeter. run active on a X2400 GE amp. source form alpine (no idea what for) with a cha624 changer and a H700 processor. in an old Seat ibiza.)
Was awesome. but damn expensive (even i you can buy good shaped 6w1's here for something like $150/$180 a pair, brax amp's and TBE tweeter are still really expensive)

I don't know if I have a best as no way I could have tested them all head to head.

The Ascendant Audio Carbons are quite nice for the price.

I have been happy with my diamond audio hex 6"s that I made an enclosure for. I am hoping the Ti 9's I am replacing them with will be even better.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

I usually run my midbass pretty low at maybe 50 or 63hz. The es6 easily puLls this off. I'm not sure what my crossover points are going to be since the legatias are so flexible. I just sourced some legatia pro tweeters but I am going to a local dealer today to audition them first.

the 6w1 can go lower as 80Hz too. In the install i described, i'm not sure of the Xover settings but it might have been something like 63Hz-18db/oct - 250Hz/6db/oct for the 6w1. but it was already a while, so i can't check again.

After much consideration I just can't afford even the trade in L6 midbass'. He wants $295 shipped on a set.

I'm not going to go over $150 a pair for a good used or new midbass set. I'm looking for a nice used set of quality midbass speakers in that price range.

I don't know if you can have Rainbow comp here or even Ground Zero.
Because they made awesome midbass /woofer, especially the plutonium line by ground zero. But as it is expensive european stuff it might be very expensive in the US :|

When you say best , do you mean loudest and hardest hitting or do you mean most accurate and warm sounding with integration, midbass is really important in any vehicle however integration with a woofer can meka good set sound bad or a bad set sound good.

I have been impressed by a number of drivers , I love the sound of the Hybrid 8's, but persoanlly run a pair of Focal K2P's in my car.

While they are great sounding to me the best midbass I have heard is a Beyma, granted it was done on a custom passive but still.

I must say I am not a fan of the DLS and have not heard the Dyn's but have heard the morels which pack a punch too.

If you lookinf for a nice cheap midbass , then there is a set of Orion XTR8MB's on the bay.

I actually have the ES-6 midbass with my Eurosports. Has good midbass but I'm going to sell my comp set as a whole so those need to go with it. I'm going with the Legatia L4 midranges since to me they sound much better than my ES-4s. I'm looking into Scanspeak Revelators and the Legatia L6 midbass... tough call. If I can get a good deal on a used set of Scans I'll go that route... I think they sound a little better than the L6 IMO.

I don't know what size of the Scans you intend to buy,but I have a pair of the 18W4531G00 with 2904/60000 tweets via 4 custom made passive filters(each speaker it's own),made by a speaker specialist who also retails Scans,Morel,Focal,Seas etc...
Powered by a PG ZPA0.3 With TBAT via Alpine 9835R cd-tuner.Doors are very well damped by Dynamat.
This is by far the most accurate SQ combi I have.
Midbasses are crossed highpass from 40Hz@18db.
Punch,dynamic,low-end ,very clear and if you wish loud, superb midrange.I need to say that the PG ZPA amp also has a part in this totatlity.
I'll say go for the Scans, you won't be dissapointed!
