Inspired by the re-cap threads here and elsewhere I have taken the plunge. This is a first for me, comments and advice welcomed as I would hate to blow it with this amp.

On to the piccies......


After removing 6 of the caps using Chip Quik but before clean up, looks like a little cap spooge....

A couple of lessons learnt,
Chip Quik is your friend
and
Grinding the side cutters to cut flush helps a bunch.






Oh and clean up the kitchen table before the missus gets home.



Thanks to all on the forum who posted tutorials and info. I would have used this amp until catastrophic failure, never knowing the cause.

Well done! Now you can enjoy it for years and years...

Very impressive work. ChipQuik is the best stuff out there for this type of work. No more damaged vias when you use it.

The flush cut nips help keep the job clean as well.

After de-soldering the caps I cut their legs off flush with the board for easier removal.
Even though the Chip Quik tended to clog the solder pump,it's still the way to go with this work.

don'tcha love it when you take a tool and modify it in some way that you hope will help, and not hurt anything. I can only imagine thinking that you were all in when the sparks from the grinder started flyin. I might have to do that myself as I have an extra set of side-cuts....

Beware of the grinding in the presence of ribbon tweeters! :oops:That is one shrapnel hungry gap. Never were the same after that.
$20 specials, not too painful.
Now I take it outside. So much gear waiting to suck up magnetic dust.

in general I would recomend aginst ever grinding metal around speakers, its is a rough lesson to learn and I have learned it myself. It only takes one itty bitty piece of that metal to work its way down to the inside and its done.... I have had to grind/cut mounting brackets on some speakers since then and I always make sure to run a vacuum and take measures to ensure that he metal is taken off in the direction away from the speaker and towards the vacuum.
