What do you want to know exactly?
The first one made was anodized black and made overseas at the original production factory and would prove to be too expensive to produce, I recently sold that one. The rest are powder coated black and were made here in the PG factory. PG had several extra's that didn't go on amps and Tibbs started buying them from the factory direct. I have seen/owned all but the X400.1. I'm not sure they made them for that amp.

PG made the Onyx amp covers "in-house" for a limited number of amps after they realized it would be too expensive to have them anodized from where they were being produced, overseas.
The amp was still produced overseas, but not the cover. They made a few extra covers which people started buying until they were gone.

Why were they made? I guess cuz they looked good. There were only a limited amount of actual Onyx amps made. For the real answer someone from PG from that time period will have to speak up.

No problem. His username is "mr tibbs". He's prolly gonna have the same information, he just so happened to be the first person to call PG and ask if they had any extra Onyx covers. I believe he bought a X1200.1 and X100.4 cover. He still has the X100.4 cover with amp that he's selling right now.

This is my understanding. I've only had one (so far) that had issues and it was brand new, and I have owned MANY Xenons . If it goes out, it will go out fairly quickly.
Here's some good reading Errin wrote a while back on the Xenons if you haven't read it yet.
