Hi folks, Right now I have 2 12in elites hooked up to a soundstream tarantula (old school chrome) amplifier. They are getting about 1000watts each which is PG minimum spec. To put it mildly, the speakers are laughing at me cause they want more power. Each of them are in a dual PG spec. 1.8cu.ft enclosure. my question to everyone here is, do I get a bigger amp? Or do I get a single 12 ported box and use the full 2000watts on 1 speaker? I am not going to compete with this set-up so whatever I do will be just for my benefit. If I were to get another amp, I would be selling the soundstream and looking into something in the 3500-4000 watt range. The single box would be cheaper but God do I love the bass. By the way, the low end on these subs is just plain STOOOOOPID loud! It makes me smile everytime I crank the knob. I guess you could say my goal is spl with a hint of sq thrown in, if that makes sense. Thanks for the advice!

I would guess a nice little matching pair of new amps is the way to go. I don“t think that a vented enclosure with a single 12 will please your SQ corner.

I'll trade you a Autotek Mean Machine MX3000.1 for your tarantula :) It does 3Kw RMS into 2 ohms, Pretty decent sub amp. I am running it right now in my Jetta driving 3 PG RSDc 12's.

I'd love to get a third tarantula :D

Later,
Jason

Yeah those Elites are power hungry beasts, aren't they!? Best install I heard was 3000w from two Tantrum 1200.1's, one to each voicecoil. So much control... earth shattering bass levels. Simply amazing! So my vote is to run one ported sub (biggest port you can fit), and feed it 2000w. Should handle that all day long. 3000w is pushing it unless it is for short burps, but the friend who had that setup would keep it turned way down most of the time.

Gotta use both subs  you will not be happy with only 1 sub is what I'm thinkin....
I personally would love to try American Bass myself. DD of course but very pricey
here's the one I really like

so there is a few different choices all depends on how thick your wallet is i suppose.

that should do the trick.
Right on! Although pricewise it is definatly out of my budget. I looked at the %thd and it listed at 1.5%. I remember reading somewhere that anything over 1% is audible. Add to the fact you are using 10,000watts to amplify the the distortion..............No thanks.

1% is audible on midrange/treble, but up to 10% on sub-bass! Our poor ears can't even localize frequencies below 60Hz, which is why we get away with mounting subwoofers in the trunk, and not running them in stereo!

Sorry kinda offtopic, but how would the Elites do hooked up with MS-amps? Would it be possible to use MS2125, or is MS2250 a minimum?

A pair of 2125's would do the trick. The coils are too low impedance to run bridged, unless you go 8 ohms (which gets you half power, and the Elite needs all the power it can get).

Tom, is the Elites 2x2 ohms? Cause I kinda imagined that I could go with 2 bridged 2125s (one on each coil). That would do da thing ;)

Then I cannot see the problem doing 2x2125s bridged. Or???

As I said, "A pair of 2125's would do the trick" ;)

I was just saying there's no single MS amp that would be ideal for the job. Except maybe an MS2250TA with some fans...

Ahh... Sorry, I misunderstood you.. Maybe such woofers would be nice instead of my Celestion AD12s...

Just a little update. I decided to get Jacamp2's Autotek. Can't wait till we get some cooperating weather! Also, Lukeman269 offered to build me a single ported box for a very reasonable price. So I will try the single ported and if I don't like it, I'll just throw my sealed box back in. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Thanks for all the suggestions, I kick myself for not signing up here sooner! Cheers!!

Edit: By the way, when I metered the voice coils I got an actual reading of 3ohms per coil. If the Autotek gives me 3000w @ 2ohms, giving it 1.5ohms on a single sub should be fine as long as I'm careful on the gain, right?

the gain you measure on the speaker will always be different then what the speaker rating it. Just use the rating on the speaker and you will be fine.
