what caps for my zx475ti 600ti and 500.4 ti

Post by gentlejax2 »

I looked in my zx475Ti and it appears the tops of the 4 caps that are close to center of the board are swollen so I need to replace them.

I am running the zx600ti and the 500.4Ti so that should allow me to try to change these caps myself.

does the bottom of the amp case come off so that I dont have to remove the circuit board out the amp?

what else should I replace?

part #s would be good. I never do this myself but I have 3 of these so I need to look at it myself.

Can you post a photo? Sometimes the plastic disk on the top of the cap gets hot and bulges out. This does not mean your caps are necessarily bad. However, it does not mean they are OK either.

look at the base of the caps on the board and see if you can put a piece of paper under it and see if there is anything leaking.

I put the cover on before I knew I had any responses .. I will open it back up later and check under the caps.

so how hard is it to get the board out the case so I can see underneath?

Can you push down on the gloss black plastic disk, or is it rigid? If rigid, then the top of the cap has vented open, but if you can push down on it, then that is just distortion from heat. I have seen this many times before, and maybe 1 out of 10 they are actually bad underneath.

The other option is to actually remove the disk and look. If they are fine, the cap will function 100% without that disk in there.

I think it only takes on screw to remove the board. Maybe a few more for the fan bracket.

Cut into it with an X-acto knife, being sure not to damage the cap underneath. Not hard to do, but a bit tedious.

I actually got my JL audio 1000/1 back from shop today and one of the tops on it was bubble and half off. peeled it off to reveal nice flat cap.

I will check these again tonight.

sometimes external heat is the cause of the deformation of the heat shrink and other times it is internal heat nether form of heat is good for a cap. but internal heat is the worst which is mostly due to an internal short external heat is not as bad but it's still not healthy for a capacitor either. yea when using the visual inspection of checking caps no deformation is acceptable even the slightest bulge in the side or top is a sure indication that something is wrong inside the cap. i had a bad power supply cap inside a crossover that was barely sticking up on top it was so slight that it was almost impossible to notice. but it was the reason for many tweeter's that where shooting flames out at just moderate listing levels. but once i replaced the faulty cap no more blown tweeters, well at least not caused by the crossover. :)

i think it was straight warrior that had his amp catch fire when he put some smaller caps in his 475 they were smaller but had the same values. but yea i dont think his car caught on fire but the end result wasnt a pleasant that's for sure. :(

the zx475ti is not in the car. just the other 2 . they looked fine. I am still going to see what I can find out. I may or may not end up keeping the titaniums depending on the outcome of the jl1000/1 sale.

If you have never seen a cap blow infront of you, you would be suprised the force at which they can explode. People did it for fun in tech school, hell the instructor did it once for us just to show what could happen. I can remember the biggest cap we dared to do, shot that little mettal disc on the top up and imbedded it into the drop in ceiling tiles. Willing to bet it is still there now.

Always wondered what would happen to a 1F cap if the hole was plugged or it had some catastrophic failure...
