Broken part on Xenon, what is it?!

Hey guys, I picked up a used Xenon 1200.1 off of Craigslist for dirt cheap. I knew the amp was going to be a gamble, but I risked it anyway. I brought it home and hooked it up. Surprisingly the amp powered right up, no protection or anything. All was well for about 10 seconds or so, then a buzz, and POOF. Power transistor meltdown. :(

I was half expecting this, so I promptly removed the smoking Xenon from my car and began tearing into it. Two of the twelve power transistors were split wide open, along with a couple small transistors on a small PCB right next to the fan and caps. I'm not sure what the PCB is for exactly, or how I could replace the transistors on it.

I will include all the pictures I have, could one of you please tell me what this thing is/does?!

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I'm going to order up some power transistors to redo the whole thing, and I'd like to get this chip thing fixed before it sees 12v again.

PS - YES I will redo the rusting resistor.

Thanks guys!

power supply FET! i only know that because i have done that a few times. usually there is more broken then that though, and i dont know what that is.

you will probably have to call email this guy: http://www.altser.com/Service.html

I wonder if this was the one that was on the local Seattle/Tacoma Craigslist that was missing all the rubber inserts?

I am pretty sure the small fried device on the daughter card is the driver for those power supply FETs. There may be a short in the transformer. I had a X600.1 with the same issue. If you replace the parts, and don't fix the cause, they will just fry again.

He actually emailed me early this morning. He knew exactly what it was, and that it is probably beyond my repair abilities.....not to mention impossible to find a replacement pcb

It was on Seattle/Tacoma, and is missing all the inserts. Not sure if its the same one you're referring to though.

Yeah based on what both you and valeks1 have said, I think i'm in a little over my head here haha. how can I test the power transformer for a short? I have a nice dmm, just need a little direction on where to place the probes.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I truly love this forum.

Welp...That's not a good sign. at least a partial short from B+ to B-.......

It could just be from the fried FETs, any ideas of where to start probing?

It is the FET. When it is moved, the resistance goes down. I want to keep tinkering, but I know if I start messing with things then there is no way anyone will want to repair it haha.

Any ideas gents?

All of my output FETs seem good, no shorts, so I'm pretty darn sure that my problem is in the power side of life.

How can I check the individual windings of the main power transformer?

If someone out there has a broken Xenon, I may be willing to buy it to salvage parts. PM me if you're interested.
