CYCLONE
CYCLONE
I've been wondering the same thing. Then I was thinking about how my current subs seem like there is a big difference in sound facing them back vs forward. I've decided to face the cyclone backwards in an enclosure....
I do believe the original designer of the cyclone made it for IB set-ups...
It will be great if you could test it and let us know how it sounds, hehehe.

Re: CYCLONE
From my understanding of the clone, it was origanally designed as IB and also works best in an IB. This is so there is less back pressure being forced onto the veins and because of the gap between the plexi and the veins it is less likely that you will have cancelling waves in the listening side of the "speaker". Hope that make sence. Let it be known that i am not the most formitable person on clones but I do have a good understanding on sound acoustics.

Theres no way youre gonna seal a car trunk.
Youre gonna end up messin up that cyclone
They are for sealed enclosures specifically to a certain airspace.
But u can try.
Just dont put more than about 100 watts on it in IB
And make sure its cut off at about 30 to 50hz using a very high slope. 24db is recommended.

I had never heard the IB theory. I thought I had heard they were pretty particular on what type/size of enclosure they needed.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Re: CYCLONE
From what i have read about the cyclone, it will reproduce the most linear sound in a IB. i have also read on more than one occasion that it was specifically designed to be used im the exact manor in with the origanal poster whats to accomplish. Free air into the trunk. With any speaker, a IB enclosure will NORMALLY (not yelling just accentuating) allow the most linar reproduction of sound. It eill not be as loud but it should not "peak" or "tune" into any particular frequency like seales and deffinately ported enclosures exhibit. But using IB configuration you must be carefull not to push it beyond its limits, as there is not an air "pillow" behind it.

Re: CYCLONE
Sorry bud. But not all speakers, including the Cyclone were meant for IB. And you cant use any sub in a IB setup. There are speakers specifically made for IB. You need a special suspension compliance.
Some of the Rotary subs are worthy of IB. Not the Cyclone.
But as I said before You can try.
I have a nice ported box specifically made for the Cyclone.
If you want it, Pay for shipping. $75
Its a very sturdy enclosure. Even works with the Titanium Elite 12.
Total volume is 3.5ft3.
I wont be using it so I figured Id offer it to anybody here. Its heavy. Thats why the $75 price
The box was built from PG recommendations.

Re: CYCLONE
Food: i have to agree with you that not all speakers were designed to work in IB setups. But with that said, all subs can be used in a IB, they cannot handle near the power, or be at their most efficant because, yes they were not designed to be. There are many (10-20) people on some of the home theater forums that use the cyclone because of its amazing abilities in an IB configuration. I deffinately would not push the sub to any kind of limit with it in an IB set up. Lets try to think of this logically; because of the way that the clone works and is designed internally, ie equal sized magnets on all 4 sides, it would only make sense (at least to me) at using the clone in a IB configuration would put the most equal forces being exerted on the veins. In a sealed or ported configuration, as the veins compress the air inside of the enclosure it puts a greater force onto the veins, and as it starts to move away from the enclosure the air that has been compressed speeds the veins up, as they are being pushed out of the enclosure.
Again this is the reason that I believe that most of the home audio users use it in a IB configuration, as most of home audio persons are first worried about how well their systems can reproduce sound in a full 10hz - 25,000hz, and secondly how loud it is. This is what I am concerned with as my 12" velodyne is plenty loud, it just doesnt go as low as I would like.
As stated these are my thoughts and experiences,

Re: CYCLONE
after years in the industry I have never heard an ib system that sounded as good as a nice enclosure. Heard alot of them but they always left me wondering how those subs would sound in a box.
I was interested with playing with it at one point in my own system and after asking a few people that knew more about it and that I respected, they told me to save my time, just build a box and be done with it. The quote I got from one of those guys about summed it up IB - No beter way to make a pair of 12s sound like a single 10....

I will totally agree with that, with one exception. The reasoning for an IB configuration, as it has been explained and what i have read is this.ttocs wrote:after years in the industry I have never heard an ib system that sounded as good as a nice enclosure. When putting a speaker in an enclosure you are effectively building the "box" to a particular frequency via the size of the enclosure. Most of the time the bigger the lower. So effectively you are going to have a frequency(s) that will play louder than others. To smooth out the curve, and make it as linear as possable you need an EQ to adjust the louder frequencies down or the quieter frequencies up. This is where the beauty of an IB configuration comes into play.
By having such a large amount of space behind the woofer the out put (tho quieter) is much! More linear. Very little needs to be done with an EQ to adjust the curve.
It is a common sight to see a well ballanced home theater to have 2-4 18" subs in their room. So for car audio it is a bit silly but in home audio there is nothing like it.
Play with that clone in a IB set up, but as stated above, LOW power!
