which x-over?

i fancy a change, well i'm board and got a few x-overs knocking about so gonna have a play!

at present i run a KEF KE6 5way x-over with all the bells and whistles, nice unit but a nightmare to set up and i'm certain the pots keep moving over a week or so

basically a rebadged coustic.

i have both the ax204a and ax406a i was toying with using, this means the old chip swapping everytime you wanna change frequencies which is annoying and also has input and output gains to mess about with. i've actually got 2 of each so could have even more options but would take up quite a bit of space!!

got a rockford 5x, again this is a soldering iron job and even harder than the pg, very simple design though and i like that in a x-over! only 2volts input though.....

lastly i have a ppi frx456 that i'm real tempted to use, not as flexible but a damn sight less to go wrong!

what would you use and why? (i'm realy trying not to be biased towards the pg items

)

If you want to be totally accurate when setting your crossover points, RNETs are the way to go. Pots just don't give you very granular adjustment when you get to the higher frequencies, and they aren't quite as accurate either.

i hear what your saying, i know pots can be vague at the best of times but i would like to see which is the most transparant.

i know you can't go too far wrong with the good old ax units but there's a lot of people that rate the frx456 very highly, i think the rockford unit would be a great choice in the right system but not having gains is a bit of a problem for me, ppi unit is same but at least the sub has a gain control...

I don't remember which EQ he used, but Eric D (aka Dr. Fosgate) checked out one of the Rockford Processors, and he mentioned it made the system sound "Rockfordy". He said the difference was almost as noticeable as the amp test that he did.

No experience on the PPI unit, unfortunately.

update, i tried the ppi frx-456 and the results were amazing, very quickly set it up and the coherance of the system is awsome, everything has improved for the better! this unit has no gains for the front outputs and is fixed with 12 db slopes, the sub is 24db and has a gain that is useful.

just goes to show less is more.

big question is do i fit the matching deq230 instead of the eq230

The AX will give you LPL capability.........

I tend to have distaste for most Digital XO's/processors but that's me.

That's all I have to supply for useful input.

unless it's the h900 than i wouldn't bother, and i only paid £80 (about $160) for my frx456/deq230 combo!
