1200.1 or Elite12D unpleasentness...

Post by Wrennagade »

So for a few weeks now my sub has been going into these "fits" where it just rapidly goes in & out for some reason. If I turn my bass knob up it increases along with a bass hum. Music on or off it does it. I though it may be a ground issue as I would move some GND wires on my powercore & the throttling would relax or go away but now think that was coincidence. Last night my sub just stopped altogether. It has some signal when I turn the bass way up but really no movement at all. I checked my head unit & found the sub level was almost all the way up so I turned that down. My amp shows no indicator lights or anything (Ti1200.1) but while fiddling with the knobs this morning my sub was kinda intermittently coming on, throttling, then returned to doing the rapid in out motion with no sound. Now I'm wondering if either something on the amp is fucked up or if I blew my sub. Anyone have any ideas? All my fuses are good, wiring is intact, bass knob hooked correctly, no errors on the DD10 show...HELP!!!

I would check the connections in the box if I thought it was the sub. You can even try just turning it on, and then try to move the box/turn it around and see if it comes on/off as the wires inside move around but taking out would be best to inspect them.

In conjuction with what Scott (ttocs) said, once you have the sub outta the box, make sure to test the coils also on the sub ...you should see between 3.2 - 3.6 ohms per coil, anything other than that on the coils and you have problems. Sorry to hear about the issues bro, I know you've been puttin' in the time to get it up and goin'

Try moving your gain and crossover potentiometers back and forth a few times. The older Ti's were notorious for having issues with the pots getting dirty and doing some weird things.

really no need they are self cleaning. Just take note of its original position, swipe it back/forth its full rotation 5-6 times and I would not be suprised at all if it fixes it.

As already stated, check the coils impedance on the sub, that will tell you right away if the sub is fubared or not.
If its good move your attention to the amp. GL to you.....

I had the same problem. And it was the RCA cable. Try hooking up another one.

I reconnected everything just to try it with all knobs turned down. heard nothing until the level was almost ask the way up. Then as I increased the freq to 3 quartets the sub just violently throttled & I turned it down immediately. I'll try disconnecting the rcas from the cube &directly connecting to amp as I know they work proper, the other ones I got cheap at bi Mart. .. You guys think rcas could cause this?

Junk rcas or corrosion on connections can do it. Especially If they are unshielded and run by other wires, or have cuts in them. Go try a set of 20 foot cheapies run outside the car. Or use your iPod with adapter straight into the amp and see if it does it.

The problem with my RCA was the ground was loose inside. Also make sure the RCA ground shield on the amp is not loose. I had that problem a few times with the qx amps.

Just tried using my Zune directly connected to amp. Seemed a little better but not producing anywhere near what it was/should be. Tried my other RCA from the CUBE but that was about the same if not less. Had to crank the knobs most of the way to get maybe a 3rd or 4th of what the sub used to do. It did sputter the sub some as soon as I was messing with the sub sonic knob tho. Also, the input grounds do seem a little loose/wobbly although I tried shaking them some while it was playing & heard no feedback or distortion of any kind. Shit. Might need to call Altser & ship it up to him...

this will sound silly but I am not bs'in ya. Technical taps are a great way to dignose connection issues both outside and inside the amp. With the power on, Simply start by tapping on the connections to the amp with your finger tips. Start out lightly and tap the rca's, the speaker terminals, the power terminals, ect. After some light taps increase the amount of force you use and go over the same spots, as well as just around the outside of the amps case. Don't be afraid with your finger tips to give it a fairly good thump as though you were maybe drumming on a table or something. If you do not hear any difference in the subs, don't be afraid to go up to your first knuckles to repeat but don't go too crazy if that doesn't show a problem then you need to go deeper. Its not uncommon though that the problem is caused by a bad connection to or inside the amp and the tapping will help to expose it and you can then isolate it to a specific area to narrow it down.

One of my best learnings my first semester in tech school. We set up a circuit and was going through the usual testing procedures when a kid 2 rows behind me said he was having a problem with his signal generator. the prof asked if he had it set to square/triangle/sine wave, ac/dc/what ever, and was just starting to get up out of his chair when I heard, not a tapping noise but more of a smacking noise. I was waiting for the prof to go nuts for him basically banging on the schools equipment until after the 2nd one, suddenly he announced it was working now. The teacher got excited, but not mad and told us all to pay attention to him for just a second. He then took the time to explain that he didn't hit it, he didn't beat on it, he was performing technical taps on it and you would be amazed how often it will work for you, and you can bill for it too! Used that stupid little piece of info for years some of my best learnings....

Don't know what the Zune has for signal output, but if its like the iPods, a line driver or higher gain may be needed for strong output. That's not what your looking for though. Is it musical. Does it sound right... Who cares about volume when testing. I like to test at pretty low volumes. Less chance of blowin shit up.

he just needs to find out if his input is bad. Neither the source nor the output is important just as long as its different from what is currently playing.
