If one were going to make a custom fan shroud for their amp rack, what type of fans would be the best to look at? I am looking at 80mm computer case fans, mostly because they are the right size generally, and run off of 12v DC. I'm kind of thinking it would have to be a very rugged fan to survive in a vehicle, but for this application, the sound it produces wouldn't necessarily be that important, so long as it's under 60db.
Am I on the right track with this line of thought, or should I be looking at something else entirely?

Being loud without good sound quality is pointless, but having good sound quality without being loud is also pointless.
Re: Custom Fan Shroud
What I'm thinking is make an enclosure over the amps with an acrylic window over each amp, leaving an inch or so of space over the amps for air flow. The amps are 2.6" high and 10.6" wide, so (3) 60mm fans on each end, for a total of 6, would more or less be the right size, blowing from left to right.
Would computer case fans be the way to go, or is there something else I should be looking at?

I use Delta electronics fans, 80mm x 80mm x15mm high volume fans,in my MS shrouds and other PG amps that use fans they are cheap, about 7 or 8 bucks each.. I use the ones that I can control the rpm from the tach wire (3 wire) with a computer fan controller. They make about the highest quality fans you can buy.

depends on space requirements more often then not. I am running a style commonly called a squirrel cage fan just because of the space requirements.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

The highest output computer fans by far are made by Delta, but they are also the loudest by far. I was looking at the Deltas, but I'm wondering what having 6 Deltas would sound like, considering each is in the 60-70 db range. 80x80's would be too big, but 60x60 would probably work.freshkryp69 wrote:I use Delta electronics fans, 80mm x 80mm x15mm high volume fans,in my MS shrouds and other PG amps that use fans they are cheap, about 7 or 8 bucks each..
