Okay...I've had a couple of Xenon 10XD2 subs pumping in my trunk for the last 6 years. They are being pushed by a Xenon X600.1 amp. Each sub is sitting in .75 cu. ft. of space stuffed with polyfill. I have never really had any problems at all over the years.

Saturday, I was messing around and built a test box that allowed me to load the subs and set them firing down at the trunk floor (face of the subs are 4" from the floor). The box is approximately 1.6 cu. ft. total and both subs share the air-space. I didn't put any polyfill for the test, but it sure hit harder than my current set-up.

I had noticed when I pulled the subs from my current box, the magnet covers (the aluminum part) is wapred and discolored (obviously from high heat). Should I be concerned?

When I build my replacement box to the specs of the test box, should I leave out the polyfill or stuff the new box as well?

That's a good question. I assumed that a small enclosure worked a bit better with fill added to ( trick the sub into thinking its in a larger enclosure. And a bigger box did not need fill.
I think this is more geared towards sealed boxes.
But I would like to know some fact as well.

Yes, this had been my understanding all along, which is why I stuffed my current box. Maybe it wasn't necessary at .75 cu. ft. per sub. I have also been told that having both subs in a an unchambered enclosure allows it to hit harder as well. Not sure if that's true or not, but reality is...my test box does hit harder and seemingly lower than my current box with slightly less volume overall. I think the subs displace close to 1 cu. ft. combined, so in actuality...both subs are operating in just over .5 cu. ft. or so (if my math is right).

If it were me, i would try it both ways and see what sounds better in your car.

This is the general rule you should adhere to regarding polyfill. You don't always need it.

Sealed boxes tend to have more issues with the subs getting too hot simply because the air doesn't circulate at all.

So...what determines when it is needed? I think the polyfill contributed to the magnet covers warping and discoloring. They must've been grtting hot as devil snot. I think I'll go without in the new box. Do you have a thought with regards to chambered or unchambered?

Basically it's the sound. It's hard to describe, that's why it is best to try it without, play it for a bit on several tracks and see what you think. With or without it's a matter of taste too, so no one can sit here and say you need it or you don't. The cool thing about polyfill is you can add it or take it away fairly easily, and it's cheap in either case. That said, if you are running a teeny tiny box you'll need it regardless of taste, but that doesn't sound like what you're doing.

As far as chambers, the only time I would worry about separating the subs is if they are running off of separate amps. Sounds like you are using one amp to drive your subs, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated!!! I was concerned as both subs are sharing 1.6 cu ft. I'll see how it sounds and go from there.
