Outlaw replacement..

Post by Corty75 »

Hey bro´s

After 13 years of well playing music, my PG Outlaw is now in need of replacement.
Last night it started to smell.. but it still works!

Im in Denmark, and dont know anybody that do repairs.. im pretty sure it´s the caps, they never been replaced.

So, im thinking of two 600.2Ti or one 800.4Ti to get the job done, as a replacementt for the Outlaw.
The amp´s are going in my Chevy build.
Need to run 6 mid´s and 2 tweet´s in front, 6 mid´s and 2 tweet´s in rear ( STEREO )

How does that come out to you guy´s .. any ideas or opinion´s?

Cheers

The fuses was not even hot... all of em are intact!

This powergrid catch fire on it´s own... No warnings what so ever..!

The fluid inside was running out, and almost got into the sub enclosure. Thank God the air ws so tight, that this fire couldent reach more than it did.

Man i was lucky, it could have been disaster, all my gear.. my chevy ..all

Thank you Jesus  for watching over me and my belongings.

Would you be thanking him if your car would of catch fire? Seems to me like people only thank jesus when things go their way.....I find it funny.

But you sure are lucky your car didn't catch fire that's for sure.

Hope your amps didn't get damaged.

Unnecessary period is unnecessary.

You were lucky. Glad the damage was minimal to your vehicle and no one got hurt. One can say fuses or breakers, and you may or may not have had them, but fire is a risk we run in this hobby regardless of the gear. You can take all the precautions in the world, but it is always a risk. I know a guy whose jeep burned to the ground, total loss, and he wasn't running a single piece of Phoenix Gold gear. As recently as 2012 Fi had a batch of subs that were catching fire. Hell, the $100,000 Tesla Model S car has been known to catch fire. I'd be more afraid of a Tesla Model S's batteries catching fire than I would a piece of Phoenix Gold audio gear. Sure, if you run an old amp with cap issues it can and will catch fire at some point if you don't change the caps, and that issue isn't limited to Phoenix Gold. Plus, as long as that has been known, if the owner hasn't changed the caps at this point it's their own fault anyway. I don't think there has been a rash of Powercores catching fire, so it's really not fair to fault Phoenix Gold for an isolated incident with a 10 year old piece of gear. Fires just happen in car audio from time to time, albeit sort of rarely.
Being loud without good sound quality is pointless, but having good sound quality without being loud is also pointless.

These Tantrum powergrid units are known to catch fire. Same as the TI powercores. I´ve seen it in person and would never ever install them myself. A close friend of mine lost his amps (3 MS2125 with consecutive serial numbers and dealer plexis) to a powergrid fire.

yaa.. i was lucky.

I took out the outlaw, open it up, no damage in this unit, but decided to buy two 600.2ti from a member, to replace the Outlaw.
Im gonna keep the Outlaw for collection after it´s been recapped.

Now to cleaning part, all that soot and smell inside the car has to get cleaned up.

My tantrum powergrid has over 13 yers of hard playing music, and am not angry or anything with PG, i could have done more research and learned about these issues.

You cant fuse this issue .. even with fuses before the grid and after the grid.. it would still have burned out!

Just gonna use my titanium 15 farad for the total system now, ( open it up last night and cheched it, it was ok, no black copper lines or leaks )

Wow man, that was lucky that you didn't burn your Chevy to the ground. I would have the 15 farad cap recapped if you can, it's not worth it to keep running it. I mean you can use it as it, but why flirt with fate?

Ya.. opened it up, and no leaks or black copper.
But no caps to replace.. it.s a AGM like unit, i don´t see any caps though.

Also opened up the Outlaw, though i cant see if the caps are original.., but the boards and caps are fine.
