Recommend me a small SQ sub for my PG system please :-)

Hi folks,

Newbie here with a quick question...

Im putting together a compact SQ system for my car (2 door coupe). The front doors are 2 way component Diamond Audio Hex 6.5. Im looking for a compact sub (either 6.5” or 8”) to go in the front passenger footwell. There will be no rear fill in the car.

Power-wise I have a PG M50 and M25.

I was going to use the M50 to power the front doors, as the Diamond Audios run high power. That leaves the M25 for the small sub.

Any ideas?

Many thanks
Chris

Go with an 8", JL makes some nice small woofers. Check out their W3V3 series both the 6.5 and 8" subs look promising with tiny space needed (0.30cu ft for the 8" sealed and 0.15cu ft for the 6.5").

Thanks bud i'll take a look :)

Would the M25 happily run either of those?

The 6.5 is rated at 50-150watts while the 8 is rated at 75-250. The M25 bridged at 4ohm should give you a good 100watts so either sub will do, the 6.5 being the better candidate.

Thanks again for your help

You can also look at the Image Dynamics ID8, comes in 2 and 4 ohm versions and are designed for SQ.

Funny you mention ID's, am planning on using a single 10" ID10V3D2 sub in my Explorer. After years of having two 12's in a gigantic enclosure and most of the time having them at low levels I got tired of all the space they took up, not to mention all the weight they put on the vehicle (like carrying an extra person in the back, the enclosure along with the subs and amp was at least 125lbs). Am going to try sealed this time, the transmission and ported boxes just can't get as low as a sealed box.

are you limited by the diameter of the speaker you can put in or is it the depth? I ask because I would probably consider one of the shallow mount 10's if there is room for the drivers diameter and its just the depth that was a concern. The shallow mount speakers have come a long way and its just difficult to get big sound out of a small speaker in a small enclosure.

OR ...a phorum member has a set of the Morel 9's for sale for $150 for the pair per the post below, would make a great little sub and have a spare to boot or if you have the room to install both.

Thanks guys :)

Im looking for something 8" or smaller and with pretty shallow depth, as there's not much room to play with.

I'll take a good look at the options you've listed. As long as they would suit the M25 fine, then its all good.

Cheers
Chris

i would put the m25 on the speakers.....soundwise you hear a difference with the M50......

the m25 just sounds better, especially in the mid and high frequencies.......

that leaves you the M50 who will give around 250rms at 4ohm and 360rms at 2 ohm, brigded......

Here's another option ...CDT 8" sub, sounds phenominal and has a pretty shallow depth or you can run a pair of the 6.5" M6+'s. Have ran both and you'd be amazed at the output for small drivers  . Included links to what may work, but you know what ya need for your install, so just a little more info. for ya.

The Diamond Audio's are rated at 150WRMS. Do you think i'd be able to use the M25 OK, or is it too low a power source?

Im liking the JLs and the CDTs that have been suggested :)

Decisions, decisions...

after re reading you're first post, i still would recommand using the M25 on the speakers, and the M50 on a sub......

the M50 will give you double the power brigded of the M25, and the M25 definitely sounds better.........

but if you want to place it under the passenger seat, this will probably you're best choice....

http://intl.jlaudio.com/10tw3-d4-car-au ... vers-92184

i personally heard this one play in a sealed box and i was impressed.......

or maybe the shallow sws series of earthquake could also be an option......

No room under the seat for the sub unfortunately. It will be going in a glass fibre discreet build in the passenger footwell. It'll point upwards and should be un-noticeable to the un-trained eye

Thanks for th your tips RE the M25 :)

using any dsp, or cd player with dsp? m50 could go on the midwoofers and m25 to tweeters, and for sub you can use lower grade pg amp.

No plan on using a DSP at the moment. HU is a Becker Mexico Pro, so no DSP their either im afraid.

Chris,
I have used that excact m25 running diamond audio tweets and it sounds awsome. Mine are the 661 model which I think are the same as the hex tweets. I would try running active m25 on tweets and m50 on mids. I've tried small subs like DD 6.5sw and jl8w0 and in my opinion a well setup high quality component set will be very impressive comparatively.
Take the time to deaden the doors and seal them up the best you can first. Try running both amps to these active and if you decide it's not enough you can still go get your sub, and install the passive crossovers for the components. But you lost nothing trying this way first. Just a thought.

13,8 with m25 you have 65 rms, i think...that's plenty of power for high frequencies.

Thanks guys :)

Ill try that first, then look at a sub and dedicated amp if it isnt enough.

for sq, in my opinion, i would use a single 12 inch in a sealed box, because then you will have enought flat responce in low freq. subs like 8 inch does not have such a flat response...or you could use 8 or 10 in the dors, but that would be difficult to install such a speakers. my friend uses old 1969 produced 10 inch drivers in the doors, 5.25 focal utopia on the panell and ribon tweeters in A pillars. result best sounding car i ever heard ;)

It's SQ I'm after :)

I've always wanted a Phase Linear Aliante, so may seek out a 12" version.

Would I loose sound stage fitting this in the rear passenger footwell?

Anyone recommend me an amp for this baby?

Thanks :)
Chris

i would work fine, just do it smart, and if you use sub like aliante from phase you spare place a bit.
