MPS 2500

Finally I scored a nice old skool Phoenix Gold big rig MPS 2500 :D

Dirty on the outside, but absolutely mint on the inside where it counts.
I'm surprised it on only draws 1,2 amps of current idle.
The rail voltages are nailed at only +-29V so this thing really wants to be loaded down to get the powa! Consider that MS 275 has +-35V rails.

i would not power it up again........ better have patience until the ps caps and silpads are replaced............

don't think those caps don't leak... they really do..... you'll only see when you remove them.....

but nice catch by the way.....

you can contact Nico Boom if you need silpads..... you need 24 in one big ms amp.........

Beautiful amp. I have always loved the inside of that amp.

Zeropoint is right, get those caps replaced ASAP.

Sure enough after basic testing I pulled the PS caps. There was hardly any trace of electrolytic fluid under the caps. They were so clean I actually felt bad after pulling them. But better safe than sorry and at least I have perfect solder pads to work with.
One of the endplate screws was so tight it broke off and I am kicking myself. I dont think I can get the broken screw out of the heat sink thread.

Trust me you can get it out and re thread it, you'll just have to be very patient and have a few 1/16" drill bits (you'll break at least two of them but be very patient). Once most of the screw's material has been removed then you can go to the next size up...a 3/32" or 7/64". Once you removed plenty of the center core of the screw you should be able to either bend it or break it remainder of the screw, then try to re thread it....any material left from the screw will fall off.

BTW what date code do those caps have? I've notice that a certain "date code" caps didn't leak...I replaced three sets (three amps) with a certain date code and all of them looked very clean (no leaks), then of course you have the extremely leaky caps that do serious damage (a different date code).

Thanks for the pointers guys!

I checked, the caps' date code in small red letters is :244A.

I'm going to order caps soon and this place I'm checking out has this stuff I assume is silpad material

http://www.oomipood.ee/en/product/sili1 ... 220mm-leht

Do you think this stuff is right for cutting silpads out of?

I got some from Mouser...they are a bit more expensive there but high quality, I believe they where about 65-75 cents a piece (so 24 of them adds up quickly) Best to purchase in large quantities.
