using an ultracapacitor, anyone used one?

Post by Alfaholic »

Hi i read a bit about the ultracapacitor and i saw a guy on you tube starting his car with one, im thinking about putting one in the trunk and buy an AGM battery.
My current battery is 54amp and alternator delivers 85amp, the AGM battery im looking on is 70amp would that be a problem?.
Back to the ultracapacitor have anyone used one and are they safe to put inside the car, i also wonder if i have to use a battery separator or is that only the case when using two different batterys.
I found this omn ebay:http://www.ebay.com/itm/V2-Ultracapacit ... 462bba1b21

a bigger battery will not do much if you don't have a bigger alt to supply it. That power start crap looks like snake oil to me as it doesn't have enough capacitance to make a difference in a car environment.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Thats the problem with my Alfa romeo the alternator on it is not easy to change and they does not sell any bigger i wrote wrong its 100amp not 85.
Because of the alternator is in a very tight spot and they dont sell any bigger im thinking about my options, i know i could build custom mounting bracket and get one to fit but it would not be an easy task at all.

It is not snake oil, although it's actually not 350F total...each individual ultracapacitor is indeed 350F, but they are wired in series to handle 12+V (each is rated at 2.7V).
So the total capacitance is 58.33F.

It will help with transients, but as ttocs mentioned, you still need to be able to charge the capacitor bank.
