What caps do i need

Post by stuartyp »

I am wanting to recap my powercore. Yes my powercore . i know there is alot of them but i would like it done and to be reliable i just like the idea of the power core backing up my batterys.

thanks

Which one is it?

I think it's 2.5v, 4.0 F

How many, I'm thinking like 200+. All of the pictures that I've seen show a sea of caps.

After looking at a picture that was snapped for me, I counted around 210.
A few of these and a few of those.

Am pretty sure the caps are wired in parallel not series...so the caps should be 16v at least or 25v to be on the safe side. The caps capacitance value will be around 2200uf to 5600uf each...if vwdude is correct about it being 210 caps, then I would suggest going a different route such as a carbon cap instead from alumapro.

Here is what I was looking at...the math didn't add up to me either...

I was thinking 3 banks of 70 caps...

Since they're 2,5V caps there will need to be at least 6 caps in series to make 15V max. Make it 7 caps in series to be on the safe side. But to get back to the 4F capacitance you need 7 of these 7-cap daisychains in parallel. So it takes 49 caps to make one cap with 4F capacitance at 17,5V max.

Now multiply 49 by 5 and you have 20 Farads at 17,5V max and that makes 195caps total.
I don't know what the figures are exactly on your powercore, but this is the theory of linking caps.

your money and time would be better spend doing a better alt, dual battery system or both. Batteries store current, caps store voltage, amps are current driven. There is a reason why caps are so cheap and so little used now.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

It would be a good project to gain cap replacement experience in. Lol
