if you do not use a passive cross over for the impedence its running at it will change the frequency of the cross over. Electronic would save some power that the passives eat and naturally recomended.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

They are also called active crossovers. you can use the one built in to your head unit if yours has it by using the subwoofer RCA outputs from it. If not available you can really use any that are on the market but some examples of ones made by phoenix gold are: MX2, MX3i, AX204, AX406. you can also use a DSP although that would be a huge overkill for this purpose.

are the power supply caps replaced yet? if not you might have some serious issues when you go to use the amp. Not sure what "black unit caps" are, but im assuming you are talking about the rail caps. Those dont necessarily need to be replaced, its the dark blue/silver caps by the end of the amp that need replacing. Maybe thats what you were referring to.

All caps are checked so it should be good, it's going in a stock system so I'll have to get a crossover

Take a pic or two of the amps guts more importantly the ones that vwdude is referring to no one here wants your amp to catch fire. Did you get the fan shroud with the amp?

Here are some pictures of the amp and shroud, the thing was in mint shape. Got a smoking deal for it. At least I think so.

Those are stock caps and ARE or WILL leak....slipping a piece of paper doesn't always work as sometimes the leaked fluid may have already dried and corroded the copper underneath it/them. Trust me the only way to actually see this is to remove all 12 caps and just have them replaced. Don't ruin the amp and board by letting it catch on fire.

If those caps have 2,200uF printed on the side of them they ARE CERTAINLY bad.

Once you connect 12V to the amp, it will catch on fire at a random time. The stereo does not have to be on for it to catch on fire, it just needs 12V connected to it for the caps to start breaking down internally.

We are not telling you this because we get a cut from the capacitor manufacturers, we are telling you this, so your mint amplifier does not end up like this (also mint) MS2250 did...

I Found this info...
What replacement caps are recommended?

Any 16v capacitor with operating range of -40-105*C temp range, with a lead spacing of 7.50mm, 18mm diameter, and maximum of 31.5mm height will work. Some amps will work with caps 35.5mm tall (ZX, ZPA, MS) and other can only fit 31.5mm (M, ZXti)

Here is what I use:

31.5mm tall:

Nichicon UHE1C562MHD6: dark blue with silver stripe

5600uf; 16V; -40 - 105*

Panasonic EEU-FC1C562: Dark Blue with gold stripe

5600uf; 16V; -40 - 105*

35.5mm tall:

Nichicon UHE1C822MHD: dark blue with silver stripe

8200uf; 16V; -40 - 105*

Panasonic EEU-FC1C822: Dark Blue with gold stripe

8200uf; 16V; -40 - 105*

Not sure which size I should be buying? 31.5 or 35.5" tall?

I go with the Panasonic FC 16v 8200uf that are 35mm tall, but you can go with any of the ones you listed.

The Panasonic FC has the look of the original caps as those are DIRECT REPLACEMENTS from the manufacture.

I use Hakko...but Welder is also a good industrial brand. I have a Hakko 936 (love it) and the newer model FX-888D model (hate that it takes long to adjust compared to the old fashion knob).

Forgot to ask you, did you damage any of the silpad insulators? Those will have to be replaced with new ones, DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT use the old/originals especially if they got damaged you're likely to cause serious damage to the amplifier which will require repair. I suggest you just replace all of them with new silpads.
