electronics question

I have a controller for the airbags on my truck. They are simple airlift bags for hailing heavy loads, not air suspension. the remote is huge and i would like to integrate in the dash or console. the problem it it runs off three 1.5v aaa batteries, i would want to eliminate these and power directly from the truck. ok, now the question, what size resistor will take 12v down to 4.5? there are a lot of smart folks on this site, I'm very sure someone knows.

You can get a dc-dc step down converter that's 12.6v to 5v, since your looking at less than 1000mA you can get some tiny boards now a days for almost next to nothing. There are some on ebay for 5 bucks that handle 3a, for safety you could add a resistor inline to limit the current to the remote. You would first have to figure out the actual current draw of the remote when you are pressing buttons (this will be mA) then using ohm's law you can figure out the resistors value along with wattage rating.

For example if the remote needs 100mA then you would need a 50ohm 1/2watt resistor.

Heck now that I think about it you can even use one of those car cell phone chargers (as they have an output of 5v and 1000mA) who doesn't have one uh?

We use stepdown converters on our crane load moment computers.

what kind of truck? Are you using for load leveling or to drop it? I put bags on my mustang and love em!

yah, love my little truck. it's an 08 f350 kings ranch. I've gone all led lights to include fog and a light bar in the bumper. air system that feeds the air bags, horns and an outlet for tools. then the audio system that is on going. the latest is putting 8" mid bass in the kicks. on the drivers side i took out the parking break mechanism, then hooked the parking break to an actuator under the truck. on the passenger side cut out a huge connector that was in the way. finally have the room to start my molds.
