Repair question - XS 6600

Hi All,
I found this forum yesterday after a google search, and must say I was rather impressed with the helpful spirit and knowledge provided by a few members of the board, so I decided to join.
I'm a 12V tech, been in the buisness about 10 years, and have seen and done it all. I like to dick around with repairing broken equipment where I can (What I fix normally comprises my personal audio system).
Anyways, I have a XS 6600 here I recieved from some guy I met at a party. We got into a deep drunken conversation about 12V and he pulled it out of his closet and insisted I take it and give it a good home because it was broken and he didn't want to pay for repairs. Needless to say I snatched the thing up real quick.
It ends up that the amplifier partially works. It powers up just fine, I get sound from all 6 channels, but it turns itself on and off at a steady rate. The more you turn the gain up, the faster the amp shuts off and it takes longer to turn back on. At low volume levels, I seem to get about 3-5 seconds of audio and 3-5 seconds of silence. The power LED lights normal, and you can see a mild bit of dimming when it shuts off and then it brightens right back up as it powers on. I'm not too sure what the problem is, but the amp looks like factory fresh inside and out, with the execption of the 6 4700uF caps. It appears as if the plastic covers over the top have trapped bubbles of gas in them, but if you push down on them the top of the cap feels flat to the touch. I don't know if this is just how they are manufactured of if it is indicitive that they have partially boiled but before I pull out a razor knife on this beauty to see if that is the case I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the situation. I don't feel like having to reverse engineer this thing if there is an easy answer as to what might be wrong.
Here's a picture:

I'd appreciate any advice anyone is willing to offer.
On an unrelated note, heres an old lanzar opti-50c I just got through repairing, with a fresh coat of paint (someone had scraped the purple paint off with a blade):

I plan on mating it with 4 jl audio 12w3's...
