Repair question - XS 6600

Hi All,

I found this forum yesterday after a google search, and must say I was rather impressed with the helpful spirit and knowledge provided by a few members of the board, so I decided to join.

I'm a 12V tech, been in the buisness about 10 years, and have seen and done it all. I like to dick around with repairing broken equipment where I can (What I fix normally comprises my personal audio system).

Anyways, I have a XS 6600 here I recieved from some guy I met at a party. We got into a deep drunken conversation about 12V and he pulled it out of his closet and insisted I take it and give it a good home because it was broken and he didn't want to pay for repairs. Needless to say I snatched the thing up real quick.

It ends up that the amplifier partially works. It powers up just fine, I get sound from all 6 channels, but it turns itself on and off at a steady rate. The more you turn the gain up, the faster the amp shuts off and it takes longer to turn back on. At low volume levels, I seem to get about 3-5 seconds of audio and 3-5 seconds of silence. The power LED lights normal, and you can see a mild bit of dimming when it shuts off and then it brightens right back up as it powers on. I'm not too sure what the problem is, but the amp looks like factory fresh inside and out, with the execption of the 6 4700uF caps. It appears as if the plastic covers over the top have trapped bubbles of gas in them, but if you push down on them the top of the cap feels flat to the touch. I don't know if this is just how they are manufactured of if it is indicitive that they have partially boiled but before I pull out a razor knife on this beauty to see if that is the case I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the situation. I don't feel like having to reverse engineer this thing if there is an easy answer as to what might be wrong.

Here's a picture:

I'd appreciate any advice anyone is willing to offer. :D

On an unrelated note, heres an old lanzar opti-50c I just got through repairing, with a fresh coat of paint (someone had scraped the purple paint off with a blade):

I plan on mating it with 4 jl audio 12w3's...

 I want that 50c.
I just got a Opti150 from a friend for $30.00

Not sure what to say about that 6600. I'm sure Cecil will chime in before to long.

:D Don't know if I could come to part with the 50c, I bought it off some idiot for $100 10 years ago! Talk about luck! 8)

I had to put new transistors all across the board 5 years ago because of a blown speaker but finally got off my lazy ass to paint and clear it a few weeks ago... I also replaced a single 10,000uF cap that overheated, put new power wires into the board and a new fan when I was in there... Those crappy camera phone pictures do it no justice.

I heard this thing sold for something like $1500 new back in the early 90's... Seen a few going for $600 on ebay recently....

Thank you much, I've been installing PG for quite some time now, at least 6 years in a professional environment. It's definately top-shelf in the car audio world.

The caps are bubbled from heat, the amp has been run very hard. I would look for DC output voltage on all the channels, and measure the bias set points for each channel. Chances are your either biasing on too hard or theres a DC output rising to the occasion and shutting the amp down via its protection circuits.

No speakers and no rca's while your testing the amp. It should be able to operate without input or load and act responsible while idling. If it does not during idle then theres a problem, and it will need teching out to find.

Try those tests and post your findings or PM them to me. PG has a fair flat rate for this amp if your interested in factory support.

:D :D :D Thank you, 1moreamp. Very good diagnosis!

We now have a healthy XS 6600 that is happy to be living another day!

Now, If you could just help me with this rockford amp I got laying in the corner... Some idiot (my friend) wired it reverse polarity and after replacing a few caps and supply side fets, I have an issue with it not getting +5v for the display and such... its a type rf x1.

I have pictures if you would like to see...

God I hate the way rockford surface mounts everything...
