So here's the deal...

I am going to get rid of my 2 sets of BA Pro 60's. They simply lack solid mid-bass and have poor off-axis performance. I want to replace them with a single set of higher quality comps. Since I have noticed a number of friendly and well informed people here, I will pose the question to you...

I am looking for crisp and crystal clear (dynamic sounding) sparkling highs (not tinny or shrill mind you). I am also looking for awesome imaging and off-axis presence. I want to be simply blown away when I listen to this new set. They will be carefully placed and will have enclosures for the mids. I listen to everything from Pink Floyd to SOD to Lil John.

I will be pushing this set with a ZED made USX 1000f (500w x2 @2ohms stereo, 400w @ 4 ohms) Here are the sets I am looking at...please comment on which of these you think fit best what I am looking for:

You're all over the board in brands, what is your price range, and do you prefer metal or soft dome tweeters?

I know...hence why I am looking for advice

Price range is $500-$700

As for the metal or soft...short answer is whichever one gets me the most sparkling and smooth high end.

Sparkling will usually lend itself to metal.

Smooth will usually lend itself to silk.

What systems have you stopped to actually listen to in a vehicle and have preferred? Every ear hears a component set differently.


In my experience Polks are about as dead flat as you can get however I have not heard the set you are looking at.

CDT's tends to be a bit on the bright side however very musical.

Diamond typically has no real midbass presence but a nice mid and tweet.

Focal I have never liked the sound of their tweeters......and they are french.

Zapco great speaker made by ESB, but they will require some planning on the install side for the mid.

Helix, didn't score much higher than the new PG RSd's but not certain is the cost difference is really worth it as I have no real experience with them other than seeing them up close and personal, which the build quality seems to be above average.

The Elite's and the Dyn's will be in a similar bracket for sound however I think the Dyn's tend to be a bit smoother in the mid range where the elite's tend to give a bit better low-end extension.

OZ always been a good candidate, but I have no recent experience with them in fact no dealings with them since they were a brand new market entry.




I prefer a natural sounding tweeter and a very flexible music response as I listen to many different kinds of music. If you are restricting your options to the list you have here then I suggest listening to the Zapco's Elite's and Dyn's first.

I haven't heard any of these...don't know anyone locally who is serious enough to have anything like these. The shops are pretty much just doing the A/V setups these days, and the kids around here think Dual is a 'really good brand'.

If it's any help, I have found the BA Pro 60 tweet to be a bit too mellow.

And I am in no way restricting myself to the ones I have listed...it's just a point of reference for the models I am interested in and hoping to get opinions on.

Please, suggest away if you feel something else better suits what I am looking for.

Well I have a few suggestions but they are difficult to come by, or impossible, or even just really damn pricey.

Also have you looked at the option of horn or DIY kits?

If you are interested in Horns take a look at Image Dynamics they have a mid+horn comp set which if you want high SQL levels can't be beaten.

If you are open to DIY options our resident audio whore Bdubs has had just about every reasonable option available.
